The next peace vigil at Shannon Airport will take place on Sunday February 9th from 2pm to 3pm. The airport continues to be used as a U.S. military base, with the full support of the Irish government but not the Irish people. This month we are asking for a large turnout as a mark of solidarity with imprisoned peace activist Margaretta D'Arcy. Margaretta normally attends the monthly peace vigils at Shannon but she has been imprisoned by the State because she opposes the U.S. military use of the airport. ... read full story / add a comment

Element Six/De Beers’ plan to shut their Shannon plant, sacking 370 workers, and move production elsewhere is a disgusting stab in the back of the workers whose hard work has made them billions in profits over the years. After huge sacrifices, including working part time on the promise that this would save jobs, the company now want to pack up and jump ship, with only a pittance of a redundancy. The entire cost of the redundancy scheme to the company is only €6.6m, about one week’s turnover for the factory, according to the Irish Independent! Note: This article was written before management started discussing an "alternative" proposal saving "some" jobs, probably only a stay of execution, and demanding much reduced wages and terms and conditions. Therefore, the need for a fight still very much stands. ... read full story / add a comment

Every singe day in the last month 33 people were forced onto the dole in Limerick alone. Thats 1,000 people in 30 days. This is a crisis which demands emergency action by the state. The situation is even worse for young people. Over 3,000 under 25s are now unemployed in this city. Given that there are less than 10,000 people between the age of 15 and 25 living in Limerick, and many of these are in education, the scale of the crisis is far worse than many assume. The Socialist Party is organising a Public Meeting to discuss these issues, and how we can fight back. Speakers: Councillor Mick Barry & a young worker When: 7pm, Wednesday July 8th Where: Pery's Hotel, Glentworth Street ... read full story / add a comment

The finding of three mutilated greyhound carcasses this week at a popular seaside resort (Kilteery Pier in County Limerick) shows just how expendable these animals are deemed by their owners once their performance days are over. The likelihood that they were greyhounds bred for hare coursing, judging from their build, should serve as yet another reminder that we are one of the few remaining countries that still permit this depraved and viciously cruel blood sport. ... read full story / add a comment
