Fifteen years after Shannon Airport was made available to the US military for their illegal invasions of Afghanistan and then Iraq, both countries are in violent turmoil. Here's a small snapshot of what happened in the last couple of days alone:

On Sept 30th a US drone strike in Nangarhar, Afghanistan killed 15 civilians.
On Sept 28t in Iraq IS set fire to 3 more oil wells; Iraqi forces launched an offensive near Ramadi after capturing additional nearby territory last week; US helicopters transported IS captives from remote areas in Anbar to undisclosed destinations, possibly to be tortured; and IS bombings in Shiite areas of Baghdad killed at least 17 people.
The US agreed to send more troops in addition to the 4,400 who are already officially deployed there. These probably went through - or will go through - Shannon.

A human rights lawyer who challenged the Costa Rican government on breaches of neutrality under its Constitution and won will speak at the Mechanics Institute in Limerick on Tuesday 24th Feb at 7pm.

Roberto Zamora works mostly on constitutional affairs and litigation for the protection of human rights. As a college student he challenged Costa Rican President Pacheco's decision to support the US/UK led aggression on Iraq. The Constitutional Chamber of the Supreme Court ruled the support as unconstitutional, and ordered the country's withdrawal from the coalition. He also successfully challenged a presidential decision to allow the manufacture of nuclear fuel and nuclear reactors "for all purposes" in Costa Rica. read full story / add a comment

The next peace vigil at Shannon Airport will take place on Sunday February 9th from 2pm to 3pm. The airport continues to be used as a U.S. military base, with the full support of the Irish government but not the Irish people. This month we are asking for a large turnout as a mark of solidarity with imprisoned peace activist Margaretta D'Arcy. Margaretta normally attends the monthly peace vigils at Shannon but she has been imprisoned by the State because she opposes the U.S. military use of the airport. read full story / add a comment
