I was very impressed with Vincent McGrath's speech after Pat Rabbitte gave the Rossport 5 the Jim Kemmy Award for committed campaigning for Socialist Principles. I had a very good discussion with him over dinner too. The craic witht he music later wasn't too bad either ;)

The importance of Pat Rabbitte giving the ROssport 5 the award and the openness of the more moderate sections of the party who were present to the campaign should not be underestimated.

Why is this important Graham. Direct action got us (in the campaign) to where we are not some politician ,this will be all won and lost through direct action not the mediation of the state and politicians. I personally don't give a toss for the moderate sections unless they are willing to break the law if neccessary.

If you think Pat Rabitte will force Shell to Sea that is ludicrously naive. If you form the next goverment Rabitte and the rest of the labour leadership will want to convince the Business copmmunity and fine gael or Fine fail that the economy of the rich is safe in their hands.

Perhaps what you meant to say it was important to you in your effort to move labour left which does not concern us.

PM Group, the company overseeing the construction of the Bellanaboy onshore gas terminal for Shell E&P Ireland, has welcomed the announcement that letters of intent for the key contracts have been signed to allow work to begin within weeks.
"As recently announced by Shell, contract notifications for contracts worth €76 million have now been issued to Roadbridge Ltd., SIAC Butlers Steel Ltd., and Mercury Engineering Ltd., for the construction of the onshore terminal at Bellanaboy Bridge and construction planning work will commence in mid-September," said Mr. Keith Elliott, PM’s project manager for the Corrib construction management contract (CMC) project team.
"Initial works on site, comprising necessary site preparation in advance of the main construction work, will commence in the autumn and continue through the winter months.
“The removal of peat from the site will recommence next spring, followed in the summer by the substantive construction work on the main terminal structures.
"Over the coming weeks we will be sitting down with each of the construction contractors and discussing their proposals for maximising local spend, as well as inviting applications from local businesses to support our own operations at the site.
“There are extensive opportunities for sourcing supplies, services and labour in the local area," Mr Elliott added.
"Following this, recruitment advertisements will be placed in the local media. Discussions with local services such as hotels and restaurants will be held with a view to maximising their opportunities to do business with the construction contractors and ourselves."
At its peak, up to 700 people will be working on the Bellanaboy site.

LOCAL COMMUNITY

Mr. Elliott added: "Conservative estimates indicate that this activity will involve a spend of €25 million in Connaught with some €14 million being spent in Mayo, of which €10 million will be spent in the Erris area.
“Amongst the benefits to the local community is the fact that the construction firms will maximise the employment of local people relative to the jobs involved where possible.
“In addition, there will be a large accommodation requirement and there will be a big spend across a number of areas of community activity, restaurants, shops, travel, support services and such like that goes with large scale projects.
“Also, the local community has a great deal to offer to the project’s success and I am hopeful that people will work with the project team to maximise the benefits to the area."

SIAC CONTRACT

Meanwhile, SIAC Butler Steel Ltd., will undertake the contract for the structural steel work for the Bellanaboy Bridge Gas Terminal for the Corrib Gas Field Development Project.
“We are very pleased with this highly significant project”, said Mr. Pat Ahern, Managing Director of SIAC Butler Steel Ltd.
He added: “This is a very exciting project for Erris and the western region and we look forward to becoming part of the local community over the coming year and more.
“We will be working closely with Shell E&P and the project managers to maximise our local spend on supplies and services as well as to offer employment opportunities to local people where possible.”
