Statement on Cops at Dublin Pride

On the 25th of June, while Gardai were marching in the Dublin Pride Parade and being celebrated by corporate and liberal gays, we decided to ruin their party. Companies and cops have no place in Pride. Large parts of our community still face attacks from Gardai on a daily basis. They are complicit, if not the key player, in our oppression, yet are invited to march in a parade that is rooted in a struggle against them. Have you forgotten Stonewall? We have not. This is why, on the 25th of June, we welcomed them with smoke bombs and flares. Led by sex workers and accomplices, this action was carried out in retaliation against the violence they perpetrate against our community.

Companies and cops have no place in Pride. Large parts of our community still face attacks from Gardai on a daily basis. Twenty percent of street workers have been sexually assaulted by Gardai while working. Gardai continue to raid brothels specifically targeting migrant women, one of which resulted in the imprisonment of a pregnant woman. Gardai refuse to investigate deaths of sex workers as murders. When a sex worker was raped by a Guard, the Ombudsman ruled it consensual, despite him having having arrested her earlier that day and returning to her workplace at night.

After being hit with smoke bombs and flares, a group of Gardai left the parade and swarmed people in the vicinity to detain whoever they could. Two people were crowded by indignant Gardai before being brought to the station. In their anger over this protest, Gardai sought retribution and they chose to attack an unassociated event led by POC and trans people in a separate location.

None of this has been reported in the media. There has been a concerted effort by Gardai to supress any coverage of actions taken against them, both during Pride and elsewhere. The media show smiling Guards cosying up to politicians and the head honchos of Dublin Pride. We are shown friendly faces and rainbow-coloured merriment to distract us from the harm they cause our community. This action should not be silenced, should not be erased. Gardai marching in Pride is not progress. Cops have no place in our liberation. ACAB.

Next time, it will be stone walls again, brick by brick.
