It can be most interesting to look into how the various parties on the left are dictated to from above. In the first of a series of reports Masters Voice gives you the reader an opportunity to examine at first hand the dictates of the SWP leadership in London. As these dictates are not readily available to those outside the SWP inner circle here or those as Harman would describe footsoldiers I give you the first installment. read full story / add a comment

A May 31 report in the highly respected Mexican daily La Jornada stated that in late May 2005 Paraguay’s Congress rushed through a law “that will permit United States troops to enter this South American country for 18 months, with immunity for all personnel that participate in activities of training and advising, including civilian personnel.” Paraguay and Bolivia share a border.

Given recent negative US government statements re Bolivia and its social movements – which are demanding complete nationalisation of country’s oil, gas and water – this is an ominous development.

Increasing numbers of young American children are showing signs of serious malnourishment, fueled by a greater prevalence of hunger in the United States, while, paradoxically, two-thirds of the US population is either overweight or obese.

Some pediatricians worry that cuts in welfare aid proposed in President George W. Bush's 2006 budget will only exacerbate the situation. By contrast Bush plans to keep tax cuts for more affluent sectors of the population, they note. read full story / add a comment

Carcavelos beach is just outside of Lisbon the capital of Portugal, where the EU deal on good times for poor people was made.

Yesterday during the national holiday, Carcavelos beach filled up with happy Lisbonites relaxing from the worst inflation in the EU, and probably rubbing shoulders with the cheery types who fly in from the north and buy flats in the picturesque city to recover from the strain of being on the pigs back.

This is modern tourism. read full story / add a comment

For the last 48 hours, the situation in Manila, Philippines has worsened...

Campesinos in their thousands have marched to the presidential palace demanding that the president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo resign (she was elected in may 2004).
They have been water cannon-ed by the police and many are injured. They have not left the city. There have been reports of a "coup d'etat" in the last week, which set against a history of over 20 military interventions, merely signals that certain military officers are "taking an interest".

Today's national day is thought tosee tensions peak.

This follows consistent allegations of c-o-r-r-u-p-t-i-o-n, which have at all levels dogged the Pacific republic, made up of 7000 islands and counting on a population of roughly 85 million. read full story / add a comment

Democrats Eye Unfolding Ohio Coin Scandal

By JOHN SEEWER, Associated Press Writer

TOLEDO, Ohio - A disastrous investment by the state in rare coins has erupted into both a financial and political scandal, with Ohio's Republicans running for cover and the Democrats seeing great opportunity.

At least $10 million is feared missing from a $55 million fund that the Ohio Workers' Compensation Bureau set up in a risky and highly unorthodox foray into the buying and selling of coins. The investment was managed by coin dealer Tom Noe, a prodigious fundraiser who has showered contributions on Republicans in Ohio and beyond. read full story / add a comment

2nd day of a strike against Mugabe in Zimbabwe sees people up north claim he's finally gone bonkers.

*finally*? Oh dear, Mugabe has been around as long as any other 80+year old leader, he's up there with paisley and fraga. you can't teach old dogs new tricks & generally everyone has their own nichname for them. You could learn a lot by comparing and contrasting them, their pals and foes indeed.

Mugabe has knocked down houses all over the shop, you know that, but his reasons are very very Western capitalist, he's combatting the "informal sector", these people were fueling the black market, living in non-council approved houses, you'd never get that in ireland... read full story / add a comment
