A mother today claimed in court that her 16-year-old son was left in a state of concussion and had baton marks on his back after he was beaten by gardaí. The teenager had been due to appear in the Dublin Children’s Court over a theft charge but was not present for the proceedings. Both of his parents were present and claimed that their son could was not in a fit state to make it to court and because he was at home resting. read full story / add a comment

An application will be made to the High Court today for leave to challenge a decision by the Minister for the Environment, Dick Roche, to clear the way for construction of the M3 motorway. A campaigner against the motorway will seek to test the validity of the Minister's directions under the National Monuments Act in relation to 38 archaeological sites. Melita Norwood has died at the age of 84 in her bexleyheath home. Born in 1937 she became an agent for the Soviet Union at the age of 25. She was exposed cruelly in 1999 and said that "she had only wanted Russia to be on an equal footing" and that as agent "Hola!" had sold secrets on nuclear weapon development to the Soviet Union. Hoewver it is widely calculated that $25 billion is needed annually for Africa so we hope the announcement today is just the beginning of a much bigger US commitment to fighting poverty." - Oxfam the USA will double its aid to Africa in the next five years to those states which are "reforming" on the basis of trade and support the "war on malaria".
