Republican Sinn Fein would like to thank the Conway Mill, Belfast for the use of its facilities; the Orient Pub on the Springfield Road for hosting a very successful function on the Friday night and David Rovics for supplying great music and song. To those who helped in making the Forum possible; to those who took part in the sessions and to those who travelled from various parts of Ireland and a special thanks to those who travelled from abroad. We would also like to say particular thanks to Roy Garland who offered a Unionist perspective to the Forum. We are grateful to him for such insightful contributions over the two days. A booklet will be printed within a short time with the submissions made to the Forum which will make for fascinating reading. It will be available from the Head Office at 223, Parnell Street, Dublin 1. /// read full story / add a comment

It has been almost twelve years since the Genoa G8 2001 summit demonstrations descended into a Dantes hell for both sides. Amnesty itself has said of Genoa that there was ‘the biggest suspension of democratic rights in a western country since WW2’. My Name is Mark Covell and I was almost killed during the Diaz school raid. read full story / add a comment

The amount of money used to bail out failed banks would have ended world hunger for 50 years. This is the world presided over by G8 leaders who meet every year to co-ordinate how to continue failed policies which favour the 'have yachts' over the 'have nots'. We say 'Another World is Possible' and over five days in June our Festival of Ideas hopes to challenge and inspire those who want to fight for it. Some of Italy's most senior police officers have been given jail sentences of up to five years for what the prosecutors called a "terrible" attack on demonstrators at the 2001 G8 meeting in Genoa and an attempted cover-up. It isn’t expected that any of the police will serve sentences because delays in bringing the prosecutions mean the offences are “ timed-out “ under statutes of limitations . But several of the most senior defendants were also given five-year disqualifications from public office . Victims of the police expressed delight at the sentences. read full story / add a comment

The face of Karl Marx can certainly be made out, but what does it mean? read full story / add a comment
