You wouldnt normally expect The Economist to write a favourable article about Unions but in this weeks edition (6 Dec) there is a piece about the Unionisation of janitors in Houston, Texas. The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) has organised 5,000 janitors, some readers might remember the Ken Loach film, Bread And Roses, which dealt with the SEIU organised strike in Los Angeles.

As The Economist requires a paid subscription to view this article, I am posting it here in full. read full story / add a comment

A fundamental feature of extremist regimes is the absolute requirement of an adversary. If a real or perceived enemy loses its opponent status then a bogeyman (under the bed) mentality is cultivated until the negative effects of that strategy (fear, loathing etc.) can be successfully superimposed onto a suitable ‘candidate’. The ‘successful’ candidate would then immediately attract the fear, loathing and violence of the extremist society (or group) in question. read full story / add a comment

Lest anyone think that strike action is old-fashioned the main Italian unions for workers in print and broadcast media have called a 48 hour series of stoppages starting today.

This is the third strike in Italy by media workers this year not including the general strike of November 25th & the fifth strike in the media sector in Europe in 2005. Most recently the workers of Liberation the French left-daily protested the rescue package of their company, and earlier this year a one day stoppage at the BBC saw workers there fight lay offs and continuing privitisation. read full story / add a comment

In December 2004, Swedish trade unions launched a boycott of Laval & Partneri, a Latvian construction firm that is carrying out building work at a site near Stockholm, calling for the Latvian workers involved to be paid the same as their Swedish counterparts. The conflict has attracted considerable attention in Latvia, with the government stating that EU free market rules are being breached, and employers' organisations and trade unions becoming involved read full story / add a comment

Duncan Campbell interviews Cindy Sheehan during her British leg of her anti-war campaign. She expresses skepticism about the Democrats and suggests that the "midddle of the road" strategy won't work for them. Sheehan also comments on what happened to her son and other soldiers and claims that most of them want to get out of the war and are only given hope by the anti-war movement. read full story / add a comment

This was incredible riveting tv and seemed like a drama. A sick old man in a wheelchair allowed some space to state eloquently and angrily the unvarnished truth of our age. I saw it on E4 and it reminded me forcefully of the fact that nowadays you never hear anyone allowed to lay out a coherent analysis of anything important on tv. TV is toxic but this wasnt. He lifted his fist and shook it at the camera in this excerpt. In other parts of the speech his distaste and hatred for blair seemed to channel all the distaste and hate for him that festers outside the bounds of polite TV in the UK. read full story / add a comment

Countryside Alliance fails ASA truth test

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled today (December 7) that the Countryside Alliance (CA) made untruthful and unsubstantiated claims in its attempt to promote the alleged benefits of game shooting.

In its recently published glossy brochure, On the Front Foot, the CA falsely claimed that a shooting school in Berkshire had raised £1 million for good causes in 2004. read full story / add a comment

The present international instability could result in one or numerous other horrendous scenarios. However, the one glaring consistency or constant in today’s international political arena is the hatred that America has attracted from the rest of the world. Regardless of any other consideration, a nation despised by all is doomed. The USA has earned its reward by its blatant double standards, hypocrisy and the serial exploitation of weaker nations. These are the direct causes of the retaliatory response on American interests worldwide. The so-called “terrorists” are only a minor distraction while the real war unfolds. read full story / add a comment

Minister for Education Mary Hanafin TD tonight confirmed the Government's support for the workers in the Irish Ferries dispute is little more that a face saving sham.

The Taoiseach's carefully choreographed charade is now in tatters following her statement that teachers who leave the classroom on the ICTU’s National Day of Action will be docked their pay.

Hanafin who isn’t known for making mistakes has surely committed a massive one on this occasion. It remains to be seen what our “Socialist” Taoiseach’s response will be!
