Solidarity with the Spanish Revolution 2pm Saturday 28 May, the Spire

category dublin | miscellaneous | event notice author Thursday May 26, 2011 20:18author by Mick - True Democracy Now Report this post to the editors

Join us on Saturday to show your solidarity with the 'spanish revolution' and to bring it to the streets of Dublin

Since Sunday the 15 of May a new movement has overwhelmed Spain, occupying over 65 squares across the country. The movement is a revolt against the injustice of the market and the complicty of the political class.

Just like in Ireland, the State's management of the crisis in Spain has been characterised by a complete prioritisation of the financial system and property speculators. The political class have acted as if ordinary people no longer count.

But on the 15th of May over 150,000 people took to the streets across Spain, chanting 'they don't represent us' and imagining a different politics. Once the squares were occupied the movement quickly turned into a nation-wide labratory of grassroots politics, which still continues in defiance of its ilegalisation.

The unbridled energy of this movement, which has left the main parties and the media searching for ways to dismiss it, has proved infectious- with demonstrations from Buenos Aires to Berlin. Only yesterday in Athens 15,000 people relit the spark of Spanish revolution.

The contagion of the movement reflects the common reality we confront across Europe.

Following last weeks energetic protests in Dublin, Cork and Galway, this Saturday we want to come together once more and share the inspiration on the streets of Dublin.

Saturday's demonstration in Dublin will feature an open 'street assembly' and we encourage people to bring their own banners.

Following the spirit of the Spanish movement we ask people not to bring Party-political banners or placards.
