Video of Climate Action Shannonbridge![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() An action to halt work at the world's largest peat-fired powerstation Ireland has some of the world’s most important bogs. Peatlands comprise almost a fifth of Ireland’s land cover, and lock away a massive 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon. They are also home to around half our endangered bird species and around a quarter of endangered plant species. Peat bogs are amazingly efficient carbon sponges. A healthy bog typically stores 10 times more carbon per hectare than any other system, including forests. Peatland protection, according to the UN Environment Programme is “among the most cost-effective options for mitigating climate change”. Damage to peat bogs is now producing the equivalent of over a tenth of total global fossil-fuel emissions. Very Brave.
Great video.
Hope you have a great week. Hats off to all who organised the event, the first in Ireland.
The plant burns milled peat, which is obtained from the surrounding bogs, which cover 5,500 hectares (13,500 acres).
Around one million tonnes of peat is used annually.
The peat fire they burn in the protest a fraction of what is burnt every minute at the plant, not a contradiction but a statement.
Why when involved in such an action do people feel the need to mask up?
The action is great and one to be proud of, so why if people are prepared to get involved in the action do people feel the need to mask up? To me it takes from things.
Other than that keep on keepin on!
'Sure you can tell the kids nawthin''. Then I copped myself on. 'Who am I to be telling the kids anything!' Mask on, action on, my lovely friends!
"Damage to peat bogs is now producing the equivalent of over a tenth of total global fossil-fuel emissions."
This is a truly frightening statistic. A practical campaigning point: it would be useful if the source could be added, or given, as it's always useful to have that sort of info when arguing in local campaigns.
Even though the video has been removed, its greatly good to be reminded of the worth it was.... :-)
