As part of its “Reclaim the Republic/Athshealbhaígí an Phoblacht” campaign éirígí has published an online collection of writings on the theme of “What The Proclamation Means To Me”. The contributions have been written by individuals from a variety of backgrounds including the Arts, Journalism, Trade Unionism and Political and Community Activism. Among the contributors are a number of household names including Damian Dempsey, Michael O’Seighin and Tommy McKearney.

To view the collection visit http://www.eirigi.org/latest/latest261006.htm

Each contributor was asked to compose a short piece on what the 1916 Proclamation of the Irish Republic meant to them in either a personal or political capacity. This collection of writings is the second major element of the “Reclaim the Republic/Athshealbhaígí an Phoblacht” campaign launched by éirígí to mark the ninetieth anniversary of the 1916 Rising. The other main element of the campaign has seen éirígí activists distribute full colour, poster-size copies of the Proclamation to more then 45,000 Dublin households.

The campaign is asking people to examine how the Ireland of 2006 compares to the Ireland hoped for by those who declared the Irish Republic of 1916. Where individuals conclude that the Ireland of today is but a poor imitation of an All-Ireland Republic which genuinely “guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities” éirígí is encouraging them to become politically active and “Reclaim the Republic”.

éirígí is inviting members of the general public to submit their own contributions to the collection. They can do so by writing a short piece (preferably less then 500 words) on the theme of “What The Proclamation Means To Me”. Contributions, which will be added to the collection online on the éirigi website, should be e-mailed to whattheproclamationmeanstome@eirigi.org
