Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade

(CAFT)

PRESS RELEASE-PRESS RELEASE

FUR NO MORE- FOR FUR-FREE CLERYS

The Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade have kicked off this seasons campaigning with a notch on their belts.

They have secured ‘in writing’ an assurance that CLERYS DEPARTMENT STORE will not be including fur in their fashion items this coming Winter season …or ever again.

Store Manager Michael Byrne of Clerys said ‘It is the intention of Clery & Co 1941 to trade as a fur free Department Store’. In taking his commitment a step further Mr Byrne explained ‘ In relation to our franchise operators in this store, Clery’s will endeavour in as far as possible to ensure that no fur products are sold by any consession in Clery and Co (1941) Ltd.’

CAFT was re-established in 2005 to end Dublin’s fur trade. Irelands remaining 6 Fur Farms will be targeted in the current campaign. Activists are in the process of compiling lists of shops that have fur on their rails. A blitz on these shops will be organised to make DUBLIN FUR-FREE.

Fur is cruel, unnecessary and the product of a bygone age. Animals on fur farms are killed by Gassing or ANAL- ELECTROCUTION.

Some facts :

· Fur Farm Raids IRELAND
1. 26/10/98; Shanbally, Ring, Dungarvan, IRELAND; hundreds of minks
liberated.
2. 19/02/03; Ballymanus, IRELAND; 1000 minks liberated.

· Statistics:
Furfarming banned since the beginning of 2003 in Northern Ireland but not in
the Republic of Ireland. Six minkfarms and one foxfarm produce 140.000
minkpelts and 1800 foxpelts.

In March 2005 a Bill to ban fur farming, put forward by Dan Boyle, TD (Green Party) was narrowly defeated allowing FUR FARMING to continue.
