The power outage in Spain and Portugal wasn't caused by extreme weather, but by an over-reliance on wind and solar. If the UK continues on its headlong path to Net Zero, we can expect similar failures.

Why do we fail to deport those whom we should deport? It's due in the end, says Dr David McGrogan, to an excess of pity. We are pitying ourselves into disorder and social decay. We need to be willing not to be nice.

Newspapers and Property Promotion

Some objectivity in car reviews but none in house reviews

It is strange that while it is often said that the purchase of a house is the biggest decision which most people have to make, newspapers make no claims that property reviews are objective. Nevertheless, they are presented under journalists' bylines, sometimes following a site visit, but the resultant copy does not differ from what an estate agent would produce.

Car reviews are more objective generally than house reviews but motor manufacturers can provide lavish corporate junkets and it is hardly a surprise that the marketing spend can pay dividends.

In last Sunday's Property Supplement in the Sunday Tribune, there is a Waste Management feature which is labelled 'Commercial Feature' contaiing 'Company Profile' pieces that are clearly brochure copy. Property features are treated no differently to the Iraq War for example.

The front page article on a cottage in Laragh, Co. Wicklow selling for €900,000, is full of superlatives including comments from the owner. It begins:'With its magical aura...' and concludes with :'My 'big' entertaining room where I've often seated 20 for dinner is full of light.....'

In between, the owner Clodagh Duff gives no reason as to why such a jewel is on the market. Of course, the point of it all isn't to provide the punter with too much information!

Oh stop whinging. Nobody really believes anything in Irish newspapers anyway. It seems to be a prerequisite to becoming a National Union of Journalists' member that you have to be able to tell bare-faced lies without letting the truth get in the way.

Most ordinary people know what self-styled Irish journalists are - recyclers of ideas and copy from London newspapers and purveyors of sensationalist and mindless stories and given to cheap promotion of pals.

Even at the "sainted" Irish Times I know of lots of journalists who are getting presents, dinners, holidays, etc. from the businesses or people they write about.

Journalists in Ireland (with the possible exception of the Sunday Business Post) are a lousy useless bunch. They are also some of the biggest tax dodgers in the country - just look at Conor Cruise O'Brien (also, I might add, a former Labour Party Minister).
