WORD IS OUT
(STORIES OF SOME OF OUR LIVES)
Dir. Nancy Adair, Andrew Brown, Rob Epstein, 1977
English (with English subtitles) The perfect bridge to Season Four. This is a choral documentary film about a bunch of people remembering what it was like to be queer… in the “Repression-Rules” Fifties… followed by “The-Times-They-Are-a’Changing” Sixties… to finally get to the end of the rainbow in the “Liberated Seventies”!! One of the great surprises in this film is to see how much the gay men, the dykes, the bisexuals, the trans, the queers, were all willing to work together and to listen to each other. Yes, Lesbian separatism had emerged at this time as a political movement, but feminism had made everyone wonder how our gender (as opposed to our physical sex or our sexual preference) makes us who we are, and how much of homophobia is actually a horror of gender deviance. Yes, these people in the revolutionary gay liberation front could not have predicted that 45 years later we would be discussing marriage and parenting, but they were already publicly challenging the definition of family, knowing they would be crushed by the law. You will laugh, you will think, you will shake your head… and you will be in awe. Without people like these, we wouldn’t be here today.
