The ceremonial opening of the power-sharing Executive at Stormont, with Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness sitting alongside Ian Paisley of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), is portrayed as a fairy tale ending to the Northern Ireland peace process. In fact, it is more akin to a business agreement between two hostile parties charged with opening up Northern Ireland PLC to global investors. read full story / add a comment

Australian scientists Geoff Jones & Glenn Almany, both of the University of James Cook in Queensland have published the results of their long awaited "Nemo Fish" study.

They irradiated more than 300 female fish in the waters surrounding Papua New Guinnea in the South Pacific so as to track them and test the Walt Disney "in search of Nemo" theory that fish always return home (if not on your dishie - they're at home - irradiated - extinct or cutely searching their moma's and papa's).

At least 60% of the tracked fish returned home. It's not a land slide majority but is certainly indicative of a fair chunk of the fish in question sharing something important in common :- "their idea of home". Thankfully for 3rd world fisherpeople fish have remarkably short memories and so any of the more suspicious fish will soon forget how much studying went into their habits & movements.

Carlos the Jackal, a Venezuelan whose real name is Ilich Ramírez Sánchez was for many years the most wanted terrorist on Earth who popped up in fiction and movies.

But eventually he was brought to France where he stood trial and stunned everyone with his incoherent gurgling once he took the stand. Honestly fact really disappointed everyone and the Jackal was nothing like the man fiction had portrayed. Well - everyone will get to hear more incoherent gurgling because the Jackal is going back to court. This time he will face charges relating to a bomb on the Toulouse-Paris train el 29/3/82 (5 dead), the offices of the magazine Al Watan Al Arabi in París 22/4/82 (1 dead), a bomb at the Sant Charles station in Marseilles (no dead) and a train in Tain-L'Hermitage 31/12/83 (5 dead).

The Government has decided to commemorate the Famine!

With what?

A State Reception in Iveagh House!

How appropriate for this Government to mark the anniversary of the Great Irish Famine by a Reception in Iveagh House. Let them eat, drink and be merry for today we let others die.

Would it not be more suitable to mark the Famine by a grant of aid to other famine-stricken lands? This Government has never been able to reach the Foreign Aid targets it set itself. read full story / add a comment

"There were calls today for an investigation into the Scottish election after polling descended into chaos with tens of thousands spoilt ballot papers, faulty counting machines and bad weather delaying the return of ballot boxes. With two simultaneous elections being held under three different voting systems, some seats saw more than a 1,000 spoilt papers being discarded. Although the SNP leader, Alex Salmond, won his own seat and appeared set for a narrow national victory, a result is not now expected until the early afternoon."

As the General Election looms, and the EPA hearing draws to a close, Áine Ryan draws a few conclusions about the current state of play in Corrib saga in the current edition of the Mayo news.

She points out that Shell have no approved route for their pipeline, and when they come up with one (if they ever do) they will have to go through the whole process again.

They also have to deal with the fact that politicians like Martin Ferris and Tommy Broughan could well be in the government next month, and the Shell to Sea campaign, although shaken by police brutality, has not gone away... read full story / add a comment
