Today, the American public is no longer able to claim ignorance over the real cost of filling their SUVs with gas nor are they able to deny their status as a hypocritical, ungodly, pariah nation. Few people anywhere are unaware of America’s dirty little grab for the resources of weaker nations. For every full tank of gas INNOCENT human blood has been spilt, particularly the blood of those least able to defend themselves, CHILDREN. When faced with undeniable and unpleasant realities Americans seek refuge in the unreality of their televisions or other distracting entertainments. The cost of the American lifestyle today is served to local populations for breakfast, however, the media is careful to neatly package all distasteful material in justifications, propaganda and flagrant lies (that have no currency anywhere but America). read full story / add a comment

Genuine solidarity

The launch of the Hands off the People of Iran campaign in Ireland last week was an important success. It showed the potential of Hopi to draw others in and give real solidarity to left and progressive forces in Iran. Yassamine Mather put forward forceful arguments against many misconceptions. She explained the political realities in Iran and the struggles that are ongoing against the theocratic regime. She argued against the idea that the development of nuclear power by Iran was the impetus behind any US intervention. The true reason is that the Iranian state is far too influential in Iraq for the liking of the Bush administration.

Yet more bad news if you're a serviceman or servicewoman with the US armed forces. The Pentagon have drawn up a list of sites which their employees will no longer be allowed access from company computers. Though facing off advocates of freedom on the web, the Pentagon were quick to clarify the ban will only apply to US base computers. A regular soldier or officer in Iraq or Afghanistan will still be free to log on to the "banned list" from any internet café they can find in Baghdad or Kabul that are still occupier friendly. The news is sure to overshadow the other little titbits of news from the hive this wednesday evening ; Sarkozy's wife didn't vote in the second round and wants a divorce & Prince Harry of the half-blood Windsor is not afterall to be allowed join his regiment of squaddies in Iraq or active service. Human Rights Watch provides an update on the Iranian Juntas war on women. This puts things in the context of human, civil and gender rights.

Iran’s arbitrary arrests of thousands of men and women in recent weeks under the banner of “countering immoral behavior” threaten basic rights to privacy, Human Rights Watch said today. Human Rights Watch called for the immediate release of all those detained as part of this campaign, including more than 80 people seized in a raid on a private gathering in the city of Esfahan on May 10, 2007.

Carol Coleman, RTE's Washington correspondent, interviewed George Bush in 2004, but while the tone and manner of her interview appeared coarse and combative, the questions she posed were not the critical words one might expect for a man, at the time, responsible for 100,000 Iraqi deaths. The context remained, not that the invasion of Iraq was illegal, as Kofi Annan had stated, but that it was a mistake - a far more friendly term.

This a statement and an appeal for solidarity from a group of Iranian workers based at the Iran Khodro car plant. Full statement at the link.

Friends and Fellow workers, International workers day is the day of international solidarity with workers. This is the day of protest against capitalism, against injustice in the world. Years ago Chicago workers started a struggle in support of their demands and many workers lost their lives. Workers are still fighting for their rights and thousands of workers have continued the struggle for the demands of May day. The Iranian government was forced to accept workers day only after years of worker protests. Iranian workers, cannot gather free of police presence to mark May day. For years everytime we tried to organise an independent march, the government intervened and it arrested many workers as in Saghez in 2004. Mahmud Salehi, one of the workers accused of organising the Saghez events is in prison , many other workers await similar sentences. read full story / add a comment

I was reminded of last weeks Phoenix while listening to the Irish head of Transparency International on Morning Ireland's business news section this morning. He was angelically critiquing companies here who may, (be forced to...) slip their standards abroad.

Yet another example of Western thought coming into conflict with Eastern culture. In this case there is a solution which might allow the Hindus to keep their Sacred Bull and will also protect humans and other animals from infection. The Animal Health Act 2001 allows for ill animals to be treated rather than slaughtered in all cases.

Ignorant officials are refusing to consider this. Full article at link. read full story / add a comment
