Almontaser’s earlier failure to “instinctively denounce” a NYC Intifadia T-shirt in terms satisfactory to Rupert Murdoch’s New York Post had resulted in a witch hunt being organized against her and the school she helped found by right-wing Zionists, Christian fundamentalists and Islamophobes . Those in the Iranian socialist opposition arguing for a nuclear-free Iran have either been absent from the Western left's discourse or have been getting the short end of the stick from some in the US left. Many Irish people will have missed the pomp & ceremony, smells and bells which launched Europe's latest lowcost airline on ¨Monday. Despite its obvious competition with two of our most cherished little earners & institutions. The Holy See is offering cheap flights from Rome to Lourdes which I need not tell you will surely undermine both Ryanair and Knock. The Vatican is promoting the service as an opportunity for the faithful to maintain a proper atmosphere conducive to such religious devotion and prevent their journey falling into some Chaucer like tale. There has been a plethora of stories and images on this newswire in recent months of the suppression of Republican Political Dissent, the groups range from branches of the IRSP, through Eirigi and the re-opening of the Roisin Mc Aliskey extradition case by German Authorities. This letter gives an update on the continued oppression being inflicted on Iranian workers by the Iranian Dictatorship. It outlines why continued silidarity is necessary. Full text at link. Your August 9th international day of action was hugely welcomed and appreciated. Even if this has not yet led to the release of Mansoor Ossanlou and Mahmoud Salehi, it was a unique show of solidarity with workers and labour activists in Iran who are under constant persecution by the regime. I’m sure you are aware that in the past few months the Islamic regime in Iran has stepped up its persecution of protesting workers, women and students. The current wave of repression and executions is specifically targeting the widespread protests and strikes and the general anti-government climate in the country. This an excerpt from a letter sent to Amnesty International, Human Rights Organizations and Student Associations and Groups regarding the illtreatment of students held in Iranian prisons. Full text of letter at the link. I am writing to you regarding the imprisoned students of Amirkabir University in Tehran. The Islamic Republic of Iran has launched a new wave of barbaric oppression in universities. Many students have been banned from studying; many others have been arrested and tortured. Three students of Amirkabir University, Majid Tavakoli, Ahmad Qassaban, and Ehsan Mansouri, have been accused of writing and distributing articles against Islamic Republic authorities and against Islam and they have been arrested. The aforementioned students have rejected the accusations; they have enough evidence to show that those articles were counterfeits made by the regime’s agents to be used against students. read full story / add a comment

In this very interesting report from Montreal Canada, we get a glimpse at some of the undercover activities of the state and police forces which are there to protect capitalism. What is reported is that an undercover cop was caught on video throwing rocks at a protest. Clearly the state and police are working hard all the time to manipulate public opinion to believe that protesters always mean violence and are associated with criminals. When they don't get the result that they want, they then go out and make it so. This is not unique to just the place where this report comes from. read full story / add a comment

There's probably nothing much in this, but today's Spiegel reports that several German ministry computers in their Federal government have been found to contain a cunning trojan backdoor exploration thingy which came from China. Of course they already have one that comes from the NSA in the USA, & heck - Real Player invented the whole commercial backdoor thing ( I know Richard Stallman just told me on a youtube video ). & then there was yer man Mohammad Afroze Abdul Razzak who infiltrated Microsoft on behalf of Al Qaeda coz back in 2001 coz they knew Microsoft were infiltrating your computers. So really at the end this is just about language practise & helping you feel European & most of all not getting too cocky about your hardware, software or extensions. For the tenth time since 1978 the Guardia Civil barracks at Durango, Bilbo/Bilbao has been attacked by ETA. This morning's carbomb is reported as having held approximately 70kg of explosives and shrapnel. 2 members of the Guardia Civil have resulted injured. At present there has been no confirmation from the terrorist organisation that they are responsible for the attack, but it is widely felt that this is their first succesful action since calling off their permenant ceasefire of March 2006 last June. read full story / add a comment
