Today, two campaign groups are publishing their groundbreaking research on the extent of military involvement in British universities . Seventy per cent of the projects investigated were sponsored by three industry leaders: BAE Systems, RollsRoyce and the controversially privatised research group QinetiQ.
The report, Study War No More, has been produced by Campaign Against Arms Trade and the UK branch of the Fellowship for Reconciliation, a long-established interfaith peace group with headquarters in New York state.

In 2003, BAE Systems - Europe's largest arms company - was accused of spying on a small group of peace campaigners. Mark Thomas refused to believe that his trusted friend and fellow activist Martin Hogbin could possibly have any involvement in the story. But then the doubts began to set in ...

Aspects of living in Dublin 2002-07 reminded of my formative years in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. A marriage of police corruption with the denial of basic civil liberties and routine deaths in custody. Times that produced some pretty good music. "Pig City" was an '83 punk single by anarchist friend Tony Kniepp, recently it became the title of a book about the Brisbane music scene under Joh and a few months it was a reunion gig. Chavez has very narrowly lost the referendum on two proposed block reforms to the 1999 constitution of the Bolivarian republic of Venezuela. These being "block a" indefinite re-election & "block b" votes for 16 year olds.
It is too early to apportion blame or even theorise that the socialist project which is associated with Hugo Chavez is damaged by this. Though naturally that is what both sides (chav and antiChav) are doing. Hugo had in his closing speeches in the campaign railed against an alliance of Spain, its King, the USA and Colombia and then in a typical performance brought in the nazi's, but left out Farc (video attached) whereas the opposing side gurggled about dictatorships, pointed at Bolivia's worrysome crises of the last week & gleefully clapped their little handies when this time they won what Chavez curiously called a "Pyrrhic vicory".

Mainstream media see, hears and speaks no evil. Not in its own backyard at any rate. Funny how it manages to see all manner of halucinations in Venezuela. The New York Times has been screaming propaganda from the top of its lungs about today's referendum in Venezuela. The distortions and hypocrisies of its editorial is breathtaking.

Since he took office eight years ago, Venezuela’s president, Hugo Chávez, has grabbed more and more power, exploiting his nation’s oil wealth to buy up popular support. Now there are hopeful signs that his plan to become president for life may be too blatant for the electorate to swallow.

Below is a statement from the Iraq Freedom Congress in which they condemn US aggression towards Iran.

Militarization and the use of force is a key element in the US administration ideology to impose its hegemony on the world. Beating the war drums is always part of US policy to contain its international competitors such as the European Union, Russia and China, and this policy is an extension to the one that is implemented in Iraq to wage the second Gulf War and the imposition of economic blockade, which lasted thirteen year then its occupation of Iraq. The US administration justified its inhuman policy with the pretext which is "possession of weapons of mass destruction". read full story / add a comment

Despite an unforeseen clash with an Irish Anti-War Movement (IAWM) demo on the same day, the meeting attracted around 30 participants and was an interesting and informative event.

Deirdre Clancy, a leading anti-war activist, chaired the first part of the meeting. Deirdre became known for her role in an action that disarmed a US war plane in Shannon in February 2003. She and four other activists were arrested, imprisoned and later tried on counts of criminal damage that could have meant up to 10 years in prison. But after two collapsed trials the five defendants were finally unanimously acquitted by a jury in 2005.
