Jim Moody writes on the release of Iranian film maker Jafar Panahi and uses it to illustrate how international solidarity works. Rest of story at link below. On Tuesday last (May 25), the Iranian regime bowed to growing worldwide pressure over its imprisonment of film director Jafar Panahi and released him on 200 million rials (£14,000) bail. However, he still faces serious charges brought by the regime following gigantic, militant protests over last year’s rigged presidential elections. But at least Iran’s vicious clerics were forced to let Panahi out of the vile Evin prison where he has languished alongside other political prisoners since his arrest in March. Panahi’s release is an encouragement to all those campaigning for democratic rights in Iran in solidarity with its people.... read full story / add a comment

In view of the recent upsurge in gold exploration the Exploration and Mining Division and the Geological Survey of Ireland (GSI) have collaborated to produce the first ever digital release of data on gold occurrences, a free CD containing information on over 300 gold occurrences within Ireland. Also available is a seperate CD devoted to Cregganbaun, a ‘Target Area’ with 11 contiguous Prospecting Licence Areas (PLAs) in southern Co. Despite the election of NoyNoy Aquino III to succeed the corrupt, brutal Arroyo, 43 healthcare workers continue to suffer military torture in the Philippines. Five detainees--Valentino Paulino, Cherrylyn Tawagon, Ellen Carandang, Jennylyn Pizarro, and John Mark Barrientos--remain confined to miitary dungeons, while 38 were transferred to Bicutan Camp Bagong Diwa, notorious for the massacre of Moro suspects. Carandang's children were taken from their home by the military, while the rest are subjected to daily torture, harassments of family and relatives, threats, and other horrors. We appeal to the international community with a conscience to demand the release of these innocent civilians. read full story / add a comment

Ben Lewis gives background details about the hungerstrike undertaken by imprisoned Iranian film maker Jafar Panahi and of the solidarity work being carried out on his behalf. Full text at link. Activists in Hands Off the People of Iran have been informed that Jafar Panahi, the internationally acclaimed film maker who has been incarcerated for over two months, has begun a hunger strike in Evin prison. This is the latest brave step by Panahi, who is increasingly becoming a symbol of resistance. The solidarity he can generate is of grave cause concern for the Islamic Republic, despite its jails, armed thugs and reactionary militias. Panahi fully realises this, and he is using his standing to exert as much pressure on the regime as possible. He has refused offers of bail, saying that he will only accept it when all other political prisoners are released. Like him, the overwhelming majority of these prisoners were arrested as part of the shocking wave of repression unleashed by the regime in response to the enormous protests on the streets of Iran following last June’s rigged presidential elections. read full story / add a comment

Some of Italy's most senior police officers have been given jail sentences of up to five years for what the prosecutors called a "terrible" attack on demonstrators at the 2001 G8 meeting in Genoa and an attempted cover-up. It isn’t expected that any of the police will serve sentences because delays in bringing the prosecutions mean the offences are “ timed-out “ under statutes of limitations . But several of the most senior defendants were also given five-year disqualifications from public office . Victims of the police expressed delight at the sentences. read full story / add a comment

The Financial Times says it had no problem editorially with an Amnesty International ad criticising Shell's practices in Nigeria but had to pull it for legal reasons. In case anyone is in any doubt what people in Ireland and beyond are up against when trying to get justice, remember you are not really dealing with the touchy-feely Shell that sponsors local events in Erris but with a well-oiled, well-funded global judicial machine that will stop at nothing to maximise profits. http://www.pressgazette.co.uk/story.asp?sectioncode=1&s...7&c=1 read full story / add a comment

Four of the five political prisoners executed by the Islamic government in Iran in the early hours of Sunday May 9 came from Kurdistan and were accused of membership of the left nationalist group, the PJAK (an Iranian version of the PKK). The executed prisoners - Farzad Kamangar, Ali Heydarian, Farhad Vakili, Shirin Alamhouli and Mehdi Eslamian - all denied membership of “political organisations” and the PJAK issued a statement clarifying that none of those executed had any organisational links with it. Farzad Kamangar was a teacher and trade unionist who had been accused of “endangering national security” and “enmity against god”. read full story / add a comment

Seymour Hersh reveals how US troops are executing pows in Afghanistan. He also speaks about thhow the Bush Adminstration had developed detailed plans for a military attack on Iran. "I'll tell you right now, one of the great tragedies of my country is that Mr. Obama is looking the other way, because equally horrible things are happening to prisoners, to those we capture in Afghanistan," Hersh said.
