Today's papers suggest 'Bertie it is time to go' and would Mary Harney go with him. Also included is Professor Drumm and the bureaucrats in the HSE. Many years ago, women of Ireland marched in their thousands, outraged against the inequality they endured of not having the right of freedom to choose Abortion, Contraceptives, to work when married. Should everyone return to the classroom and learn to count? Add up numbers published in press releases, is 7,000 classroom assistants a rounded up or down figure? Not by any stretch of the imagination are all classroom assistants members of a trade union. I am disappointed this is not an election year. Can you imagine the squirming and questions left hanging in the air by the "can we have your vote" and move the earth for you campaigners. Imagine an election turnout like GMB ballot figures signify anyone notice how did the GPA fair in comparison to GMB? (footballers). On the 04/09/07 there was a press release detailing a possible mis-diagnosis problem in relation to the mammogram service at Portlaoise Hospital, the press release said that there were possibly 5,000 women effected and there was no press release from Mary Harney's Department. The
Hospital board and the HSE managed the timed release of materials including the fact that
many of the patients had been on the Treatment Purchase Fund Scheme. This info emanated
in the direct aftermath of Ms Harney's travelling to Barrington's Hospital in Cork where up to
1,000 women were similarly effected. Today there is a press release from DOHC which is
written in response to emergent details of 8 women with a diagnosis of cancer who had

GMB have had the best response ever to their ballot on the classroom assistants dispute. This may seem to be a possitive thing. However some important questions need to be answered and if anyone from the GMB read this I would love to hear their replies. 1) How many classroom assistants do you represent? 2) Why were ballot papers sent to cleaners, and caretakers? read full story / add a comment

With Iraq in ruins and the oil resources secured, the neo-cons that run the west have now turned their malign attention to Iran. All media is now saturated with propaganda putting Iran in the role of aggressor and a threat to world peace.Others day and daily place stories in the media portraying the internal position as one of oppression and brutality in which the Iranian people are supposedly yearning to be liberated by the west. Nothing could be further from the truth. On 1 October 2007, the Weston Gardens Residents' Association, of which I am Cathaoirleach, sent a letter by registered post to Brendan Kenny (CEO Limerick Regeneration Agencies). When Mr. Kenny did not respond after 3 weeks, we decided to go public. On 24 October 2007, we bought a full page in the Limerick Leader and published a shortened version . I cam across this tale whilst having coffee in leafy D4, in the Baggot Street area and this tied in with something that I had heard a few weeks ago in that Palace of Epicurian Delights the Embassy Grill in Ballsbridge. The latest Irish Times online Head2Head poll concerned itself with the Corrib gas controversy in North Mayo, and asked the following question: Is Shell's Corrib Gas project good for the local community? The result came in as a resounding NO, with 84% believing the project as proposed is bad for the local community, with less than 1 in 6 agreeing it was good for the area. read full story / add a comment

The recent untimely death of Susie Long was widely covered in the media in the South. Susie made a powerful impression in January of this year when she spoke on RTE radio of how she had developed terminal cancer of the colon. It was a tragic and shocking story. Although I welcome this long awaited initiative by the Road safety Authority in attempting to reduce the carnage we see on our road each year,I cannot help but wonder at the thinking that went into calling an immediate halt to the driving by drivers holding a provisional driving licence while unaccompanied. read full story / add a comment

I signed up to BT broadband over two months ago. Not only did the hook up the wrong house, but they billed me for it, insisted nothing wrong happened, and are dawdling over my What's worse, their call centre takes ages to do anything, not surprising, given that one of their agents admitted to me that there were only 10 people working there the day I spoke to her, when the staffing level is supposed to be 60. Anyhow, sick of waiting for the always promised call back, I went hunting for the bigger fish. read full story / add a comment

Ireland granted residency to about 17,000 parents of Irish born Children mostly women and then decided that these category of Irish Citizen Children do not have any entitlement to family unification and so we have a situation where the fathers of these children are being turned away. What we risk creating for our future generation is what I dread because this policy if not reversed will only polarise the community and we will have the "us" and "them" divide. read full story / add a comment |
