Dismissing the rape gang scandal as a "dog whistle" isn't just tone-deaf ? it's a vile insult to victims and exposes a government more afraid of losing votes than of protecting children, says Henry Hill in the Telegraph.

Amnesty International Fundraising Day in Westport

category mayo | miscellaneous | event notice author Thursday August 06, 2009 12:59author by Amnesty Galway - Amnesty International Report this post to the editors

Amnesty International members will take to the streets of Westport on Friday 21 August as part of a major fundraising drive and will have an information stand in the town centre all day. The organisation has also appealed for people interested in helping out on the day,or working on our human rights campaigns to get in touch.

“We don’t take money from the Government,” said Colm O’Gorman, Amnesty International Ireland’s Executive Director. “It means we can protect our independence as a campaigning organisation and we rely completely on the generosity and support of ordinary people.

“In the middle of an economic recession there is a real danger that human rights will be forced to take a back seat, making events like this even more important. The more people willing to lend a hand on the day the better and we’d very much welcome people getting in touch and offering to help out with the collection.”

Volunteers for the event can contact Tommy Roche on 087 207 0737.

Fair play to Amnesty members, but don't let the money-hunger of Head Office distract you from the grave human rights abuses taking place on your doorstep: the situation around Rossport, Garda violence and use as private security for Shell, invasion of private property, the sinking of the boat 'Iona Isle', and the general behaviour of Shell's security men.

Before allying with U2 at the Croker gig it might have been an idea for Amnesty to ask them why they have off-shored their money to avoid paying taxes in Ireland, and how much they have donated to charities fighting poverty in the Third World.

In relation to Amnesty and U2, why wouldn't Amnesty accept such support if it's on offer? Human rights is the issue Amnesty covers not U2's tax affairs and related issues.

are you saying that Amnesty should take the support even if it comes from people who are hoarding their money away to avoid paying tax in their own country?

Why not? Amnesty has taken Statoil money, 1 million kroner.
