Missing - Our Future. The Great Pensions Robbery

category dublin | worker & community struggles and protests | event notice author Thursday July 02, 2009 23:59author by M Butler Report this post to the editors

Conference on loss of pension rights and expectations

The Irish Women Lawyers Association (IWLA) www.iwla.ie is holding a
half day conference entitled MISSING - OUR FUTURE. THE GREAT PENSIONS
ROBBERY

Venue: Sat 4th July 9:30am - 1.40pm. The Green Hall, The Law Society, Blackhall Place

VENUE: THE GREEN HALL, THE LAW SOCIETY, BLACKHALL PLACE, DUBLIN 7.

DATE AND TIME: SATURDAY 4TH JULY 2009, 9.30 am - 1.40 pm.

The current uncertainty in the financial future of everyone in Ireland
is most particularly felt by those whose lives have been upended due to
loss of pension rights and expectations. Women have long been
underserved in the pension area due to being outside the formal
workforce or having disrupted work lives due to time off to have and
raise children. The need to plan for the future is now more important
than ever with pension funds suffering in the last year, whether due to
mismanagement or poor expected results. Legal considerations as to the
structure of pensions and the protection of members are of concern to
women lawyers and others dealing with pensions.

The conference will hear from David Malone (Pensions Board), Paul Kenny
(Pensions Ombudsman), Rachel Doyle (National Women's Council of Ireland)
and Eileen Finn B.L.. An insight from pensioners surviving in today's
topsy-turvy economic landscape will be provided by Sylvia Meehan and
will be chaired by the Chairperson of IWLA, Mary Ellen Ring S.C.

Topsy turvy is right.

I note the fee for non members attending the meeting is a mere 60 euros, I say/ write 'mere' with tongue in cheek.

Of course inclusivity was never a principle of the legal profession so the pricing reflects that reality.

Sorry to sound bitter, but I have seen too many decent people lose their life savings at the hands of incompetent and or corrupt lawyers.

Eyes wide open.
