When politicians claim the public supports extreme measures like banning meat or digital ID you can be sure that behind it is a Citizens' Assembly or other dubious method for manufacturing 'consent', says Alex Klaushofer.

Greens have hijacked environmental concern and turned it into a branch of radical Leftist politics. But in truth conservatism cares about conserving our home. Conservatives need to reclaim green politics, says Sean Walsh.

On Sept 3rd. U.S. Special Operations took the war into Pakistan.

This is a major escaltaion of a war that Browne and Obama are entusiastic
about and in which, according to the Guardian and Times cited above, claimed an
Irish fatality last week and more of our tennagers are signing up to be cannon fodder for.

The Irish Times celebrates this recruitment development as a milestone of us getting over old hang ups
of people from the 26 counties joining th British Army. With the decline of a Republican
dynamic to the broader culture, the churches continued silence on war, and the absence
of a visible anti-war movement - there doesn't seem
to many obstacles, or competing perspectives, presented to Irish youngstersrushing to join this immoral,
illegal unwinnable the fray in Afghanistan - killing and being killed, coming home wounded and benig treated
like shite by thepowers that be that sent them.

The article below is worth reading for explanation of the significance of this
escalation - beyond assasination by unmanned drone - in the past week

Vigil went well, we were joined by Eamon McCann from Derry/Raytheon 9/Hot Press/civil rights movement/SWP
who happened to be passing by and hung in with us until the conclusion. By the time we circled for info sharing on the war/s and
anti-war resistance, there were ten folks with us from the north & south of Ireland, Romania, Italy, Australia & France.

Tuesday was the 28th. anniversary of the first plowshares action, we remember the passing of Phil Berrigan, Elmer Maas
the long immprisonment of Fr. Carl Kabat OMI (18 years), the sustained anti-war resistance of John Schuchardt, Sr. Anne
Montgomery, Dean Hammer, Molly Rush and Fr. Dan Berrigan SJ. We thank them for the movement they inspired
www.plowsharesactions.org
by their nonviolent disarmament action at General Electric, King of Prussia Plant, Sept 9th. 1980.

Meanwhile it is not only our people who remain persistent, apparently......

You wouldn't read about it

When the US military claimed that all but seven of the
victims of its air strike on Afghanistan on 22 August were
"Taliban terrorists", it cited for corroboration the
"independent journalist", Oliver North.

Could this be the same Oliver North who twenty years ago was
at the centre of the Iran-Contra scandal, under which
President Reagan's government used the proceeds from secret
arms sales to Iran to fund the Contra terrorists, trained by
the CIA to undermine Nicaragua's democratically elected
government? IT CERTAINLY COULD.

Could it be the same Oliver North who organised cocaine and
marijuana trafficking from Central and South America into
the United States to help fund those same Contra rebels?
IT CERTAINLY COULD.

In 1989, North admitted lying to the US Congress and was
indicted on 16 felony counts. But why should enlisting the
support of a convicted liar and instigator of mass murder
concern the US military, when it is scurrying around looking
for "corroboration" from an "independent journalist" to
dispute the evidence of yet another massacre of civilians by
a US bombing raid?

The US military is training psychiatrists to interrogate terrorism suspects, in defiance of internationally agreed codes of conduct which bar doctors from involvement in interrogation.

"It undermines the notion of psychiatrists as healers, and undermines trust in the profession," says Jonathan Marks, a professor of bioethics and law at Pennsylvania State University, University Park. From documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act he discovered that five US army psychiatrists had been trained between July 2006 and October 2007 (The New England Journal of Medicine, vol 359, p 1090).

The American Psychiatric Association, the American Medical Association and the World Medical Association all have policies condemning the use of psychiatric advice in "softening up" detainees.

Amnesty protests government declaring country rendition free without checking the planes by celebrating the declaration of part of the country rendition free without checking their planes.

Amnesty International congratulates Cork City councillors and the people of Cork as a motion declaring Cork City a ‘Rendition-Free Zone’ is passed by a majority at Cork City Hall.

Last year Derry City Council became the first local authority on the island of Ireland to declare its local airport free of rendition flights. (really they don't check their planes either)

http://www.youghalonline.com/2008/09/10/cork-city-is-de...zone/

"While there is no evidence that Cork airport has facilitated the US government’s renditions programme as part of the ‘war on terror’, this motion holds immense symbolic value and shows Cork City Council’s solidarity with the victims of this illegal programme" (sounds exactly like what the government have been saying all along, distancing then decrying)
