Ban Ki-moon Launches Campaign to Stop Violence Against Women

category international | crime and justice | other press author Tuesday February 26, 2008 19:49author by C Murray Report this post to the editors

Measurable Reforms Required.

The 52nd session of the Commission on the Status of Women began meeting at the United
Nations Headquarters in New York yesterday and will be in session until the seventh of March.

A coalition of over 150 International Non-Governmental Organisations who represent the
Civil Society Groups on advocating for stronger gender reform architecture (GEA) will be in
session. Mostly these groups are known on Indymedia and the IMC's because they
have not stopped bringing the issue of Measurable Reform in the area of gender
equality to the table. and Ban Ki-moon agrees.

Today Ban Ki-moon launched a multi-year campaign to intensify action to end violence
against women.

The figures:-

One out of every three women in the world is likely to be beaten, coerced into sex,
or abused in her lifetime.
One in five will be victims of rape or attempted rape.

Other problems include:-

Sex Trafficking.
Sexual harassment.
Female Genital mutilation.
Dowry Murder.
Honour Killing.
Female infanticide.

The GEA intends to secure political will and increased resource from governments
to tackle the problem- this does not mean paying expensive lobbyists and talking
heads to produce pretty booklets but an increase in women's voice in:

Leading the struggle to expose and counter violence.
This means tackling the issue of rape in conflict situations.

The UN hopes to work with the women who have for decades fought to bring these issues
to the table and to ensure that measurable reforms are consistent with resolutions;

(61/143 and 62/133)
(62/134)
(2005-2006-2007).
I will update in the comments.

[have been contacted by a colleague who has sent me the espagnol report, I cannot type it
nor do I have a link -it was C+P ed into my mail, thus if anyone can type up and
disseminate the info let me know]

We are putting it onto http://www.indymedia.org later.

150 civil society groups from all over the world have been working decades to bring
women's rights to the forefront and bang -not one page of media coverage. This is
because the issue of enforcing change at national government level to allow for
measurable reforms in regard to the rights of women generally is not newsworthy.

5,000 women from civil society groups worldwide have committed themselves to monitoring
their National Governments on measurable reform with regard to the GEAR issue.

There is report on the Ban Ki-Moon speech on Violence Against Women at:-

Our own National Government set up COSC in the run-up to the election campaign, this
was surrounded by controversy in which the VAW Campaign in ireland asked for the work
of COSC to be halted :

The 53rd meeting of the Commission for the Status of Women (UN) is
focussing on Gender Reform Architecture:

This means quantifiable and measurable changes by National Governments against
violence (VAW) and in increasing women's Participation in decision-making.

The focus of this year's International Women's Day is on Gender and poverty.
The Western media has largely ignored the Commission for the Status of Women
incl. press releases. campaigns. and global media coverage.
