Abortion issues in Nicaragua post- Ortega election

Isis women today reports on the issue of abortion rights in Nicaragua.

In the run-up to the 2006 poll in Nicaragua, Ortega had agreed as part of
his presidential bid to sign onto the outlawing of all abortion, which included
therapeutic abortion and abortion in the case of ectopic pregnancy.

9 women's rights activists have been arrested for criminal violations in relation to the
case of Rosita , a nine year old who obtained a legal abortion. The man who raped the
child is not facing charges.

Ana Maria Pizarro . Regional Coordination campaign for the de -criminalisation of abortion.
Juanita Jimenez advocate against violence.
Lorna Norori , Pscyhologist.
Luisa Molina Arguello , chairman of the NGO's working with children and adolescents.
Martha Maria Blandon, sexuality, maternity and rights forum and IPAS , Central America.
Martha Munguia .Centre Mujeres Accion, ya.
Mayra Sirias. Network of women against violence.
Violeta Delgado . former executive officer Network of Women against Violence.
Yamileth Mejia.

I will add in the links and repeat what I wrote at the top of the page.

Daniel ortega ran on an anti-abortion ticket in Nicaragua.
The last legal abortion in Nicaragua was performed on a nine year old rape victim.
The women who fought for her rights and work with sex abuse victims are
subject to criminal charge.
The man who raped a child has walked away.

The isis women site has copies of a solidarity letter. The details of the charges against
the woman are also outlined.

The Criminalisation of abortion practice in Nicaragua was co-sponsored by the
RC church and the ANDPH (Nicaragua's National Association for Human Rights)

The ANDPH interfered in the electoral processes of Nicaragua, stole the human rights
of women and child victims of rape ;and it is alleged that they facilitated the man who
committed the crime to escape.

This is because it is cheaper and more convenient to humiliate and sexually abuse
women and girls than it is to ensure that their rights to knowledge and safety are upheld.
Whilst the nine activists face charges, the man will not face charges and has left the
country.
