Meeting on water emergency in Galway

category galway | consumer issues | event notice author Tuesday April 24, 2007 09:40author by JC - - Report this post to the editors

in Imperial Hotel

Following a very successful publicity campaign and public protest the serious issue of the Galway water crisis, how it is being handled, and how it is affecting the households of Galway, is now being highlighted. Outside City Hall, at a demonstration attended by 300 Galway residents, a letter of immediate demands was handed personally to the City Manager Mr. Mc Grath, and to those elected representatives that joined the protesters in solidarity.

These demands include:

A co-ordinated INFORMATION campaign by the city council and the HSE to ensure individual households have necessary information and are made aware of necessary precautions.

FREE, CLEAN WATER TO BE DELIVERED TO THE PEOPLE OF GALWAY.

FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE FOR THOSE WHO NEED HELP as an emergency public health situation should be dealt with accordingly, without expense to those affected through medical costs and fuel bills.

ABOLITION OF REFUSE CHARGES FOR REMOVAL OF PLASTIC WATER BOTTLES.

COMPENSATION to be awarded to persons tested positive for cryptosperidium infection.

ALLOCATION OF EMERGENCY FUNDS AND STAFF BY GOVERNMENT to deal with the immediate crisis.

The people of Galway need practical, realistic policies to address the issue of the current water crisis.
The city manager was informed of a public meeting to be held on Monday 30th April at 8pm in the Imperial Hotel, Eyre Square, when the community will review the city council’s position and action on the above demands.

The meeting also invites the people of Galway to get involved in the formation of a broad alliance group with a democratic committee to address the immediate, short-term and long- term issues of the water crisis; and also to link up with other such campaign groups throughout the island.

I found a website that is associated with the water crisis that readers of this article might find interesting. I think it is another group involved in the campaign by the looks of things. There is some interesting dialogue by way of blog comments on the site. Have a look at the blog comments about the protest in particular. the link is www.myspace.com/galwaywatercrisis

I get the impression that the sensible approach is coming from the people at the myspace site. I like what they are doing
