Fear for safety

IRAN Ali Khodabakhshi (also known as Elyaz Yekanli) (m), activist, aged about 31

Ali Khodabakhshi (also known as Elyaz Yekanli) is a prominent activist for the cultural, social and political rights of the Azeri Turkish minority in Iran (who also refer to themselves as Iranian Azerbaijanis). He has been detained without charge since his arrest on 8 June. He has been tortured in detention in order to extract a ‘confession.’ He may be detained on account of his peaceful activities on behalf of the rights of the Azeri Turkish minority, in which case Amnesty International would consider him a prisoner of conscience. The Ministry of Intelligence has allegedly been attempting to intimidate Ali Khodabakhshi’s family through phone calls and by visiting their house. There are concerns for their safety.

Ali Khodabakhshi was reportedly subjected to physical and psychological torture while detained in Tabriz Prison. He was badly beaten, and was given electric shocks. He was apparently tortured until he made a forced confession.

In Ireland Owen Rice is currently being held in Castlerea Prison.

In Ireland there have been five serious assaults in the Irish Prison system.

One death of a 'protected' prisoner.

Two suicides.

No adequate mental health care for inmates.

Over-crowded facilities.

We treat people as animals in this country. We should look to our own problems also.

Cos- it ain't SF anymore, political prisoners and prisoners of conscience are
community leaders and refusniks. the landscape is changing.

We should also look to our own prisoners both political and non-political. But that does not mean that we should ignore international solidarity.

I remember well during the H Block Hunger Strike days when Iranian dissidents, especially the Peoples Mohadjeen in Dublin, produced their own leaflets in support of the Hunger Strikers.

I write to lots of Embassies about their disgraceful human rights. I'm old enough to remember the Shah in Iran, and there's still a lot of awful things happening in that country. I'm glad more people are encouraged to write to complain about illegal detentions and torture. It goes on in more countries than I could list off the top of my head.
I just hope that it doesn't stop when Iran is no longer "rogue state of the month" on the white house list.
And don't allow the condemnation of Iran's human rights abuses to be used as justification for military assault. Torture victims do not need their country to be carpet bombed, covered in DU dust or occupied by trigger happy marines. They need someone to shine a light into the hidden corners, and to show them that humanity still exists outside.

"Torture victims do not need their country to be carpet bombed, covered in DU dust or occupied by trigger happy marines. "

Totally agree with you. All US/UK/Israeli agression towards Iran should be opposed. The Iranian Regime will only be overthrown by internal action carried out by the genuine opposition.

The real Iranian opposition opposes US Imperialism as well as the Iranian Theocracy.

I think that the torture victims themselves would disagree with this point
