Jump To Comment: 1 2 3according to wikipedia the Irish Civil War lasted from June 28th, 1922 till May 24th, 1923. An unknown number of republicans died, 77 were officialy executed, of an estimated force of 15,000 of which 12,000 were taken prisoner, facing an Irish army were killed of a force of 55,000 men (including 3,000 officers) of which 800 were killed, 250 of which deaths occured in Dublin.
Now we don't have to get choosy about the date. If we can mark 90 years since the 24th of April 1916 on the 16th of April 2006, and more than double the public attendance figures, (just compare the known number of marching soldiers and the space they used with those looking on)... http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/0416/parade.html We can surely celebrate the beginning of the Irish Civil War any day we want this year, 84 years on.
It will prove a great day out for everyone.

General Liam Neeson killed by the Mafia (not all bad are they?) deserves his comemoration.
as I understand it, the 1916-2006 march was visibile to the public at least, for less than 2 kilometres of Dublin's streets. I further understand that the main thoroughfare of Dublin which offers the most space to public assembly was not completely open to the public due to public works.
120,000 people over 2km means - 60,000 over 1 km (on average) or to put it another way every metre of the way saw 60 people, standing and gawking.
I'd like very much if the mathematicians and experts amongst the irish indymedia crew would confirm or deny the space available on the pavements either side of the military march for 60 people every meter. That will be 30 people on each side of the street. Normally people like to occupy one metre squared for themselves, but obviously under such wonderful sentimental conditions they might get a bit squeezed.

they lied to you. if they can lie to you about something so insignificant as the public attendance figures at a commemoration, then they most probably lied to you about the attendance at the Pope's mass, and some of you won't like this the anti war demonstration. .

I read on FrankMcNally's column on the back of the TImes on Saturday that he had a series of paragraphs in it this year and last about how the standard 120,000 on St Paddy's given by the Tourist board was also a blatent fabrication, and he further figures to back this up, so email him and tourist board if you like I can't find it mentioned anywhere else, you not that only one to notice it.
