Postage stamp of the 'Cuban Five' & Irish Parliamentarians

A worldwide-circulation postage stamp exposing the just struggle of the five Cubans imprisoned in the United States for combating terrorism was cancelled in Havana by Parliamentary President Ricardo Alarcón.

Designed by Carlos Echenagusiar, the stamp bears the faces of René González, Ramón Labañino, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero and Fernando González, alongside that of José Martí, the national hero, against the backdrop of the Cuban flag.

The launch took place December 12 at the Ministry of Informatics and Communications (MIC), exactly four years after Gerardo was sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus 15 years after a rigged trial in Miami that violated several amendments of the U.S. Constitution.

SUPPORT OF IRISH PARLIAMENTARIANS

Olga Salanueva and Ivette González, wife and daughter respectively of René González, one of the five anti-terrorist Cubans imprisoned in the United States visited Ireland and met with parliamentarians.

According to the website http://antiterroristas.cu , they were there for three days invited by the Free the Five Committee.

At the legislative headquarters, Olga was received by Michael Woods, a member of Parliament representing the Fianna Fail party and president of the Foreign Relations Committee. Woods was impressed by the arguments presented by the visitor and assured her that he would take the case to discuss with the Committee.

An open meeting with deputies was also held with the participation of independent Senator David Norris and Parliamentary members Finian McGrath (Independent), John Gormley (Green Party), Ruairi Quinn (Labor Party) represented by his assistant Keith Martín, and Aengus O’Snodaigh (Sinn Fein).
