Anthony McIntyre (ex Maze prisoner) comments on UK terrorism laws

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | other press author Wednesday October 12, 2005 18:03author by R. Isible Report this post to the editors

mp3 audio from the Guardian

Anthony McIntyre (IRA man held in the Maze prison in N.Ireland for 17 years) comments on the new UK "anti-terror" legislation to Oliver King (Guardian UK's Political Editor). The audio is formatted in mp3 and lasts for approximately 5 minutes and 5.8M in size.

McIntyre points out that previous draconian anti-terror legislation has led to serious police abuses. He cites the Birmingham Six and the DeMenezes shooting case where Ian Blair tried to subvert the inquiry.

He asserts that the central problem with all this legislation is that it reposes too much trust in the police and that there's plenty of evidence that this trust is misplaced.

He challenges the 3-month detention period on the basis that the detention without trial shifts the burden of proof onto the defence and not the prosection and predicts that similar to the "innocent unless Irish" the Muslim community in the UK is going to suffer discrimination.
