Peace Process without Due Process
Internment. No charge. No trial. This has been the reality in Ireland, for every generation, North and South, since the foundation of both scum states. Despite a nominal Peace Process, internment without charge or trial, still exists in one form or another today in both parts of Ireland. Clearly therefore, there is something very dysfunctional in the neo-colonial political arrangement.
END INTERNMENT Internment. No charge.
The non political family, of interned traditional Irish republican Martin Corey, can give us a good insight into this generational Irish reality, who say Marin was targeted, simply for his political beliefs and they branded his incarceration as “internment by other means”.
Martin Corey previously served almost twenty years, for the killing of two RUC men in 1973.The British paramilitary police of the RUC, were later disbanded, primarily for their involvement, in the sectarian murders of Catholics in Martin's village, part of what became known, as the murder triangle.
Martin and the local IRA, were the only defence the Nationalist Irish community had, against this British onslaught of State terrorism, with a dirty war of collusion at the highest levels of Government in London which sanctioned the murder of Martin's lawyer Rosemary Nelson bombed by the British. Martin was released in 1992 after serving almost 20 years, in Long Kesh Concentration Camp.
The British version of events is, that their Viceroyal in British Occupied Ireland, revoked his licence in April 2010 after he was deemed to be a “security risk”. The 63-year-old Irish Republican has been held in Maghaberry prison since. His family deny he posed any risk, asserting that neither they or Martin, have ever been given a reason for his internment.
Mr Corey’s partner, Lynda Magee says: “He does not know what he has done and has been told nothing about why he is being held. He has already served his time and he was willing to do it. But now he is being held for no reason. It has had a devastating effect on him and the whole family.”
Martin's brother Seanm said they have been “kept in the dark. They have given us no evidence of any wrong doing on Martin’s part. All they said was, that he visited a couple of houses in Craigavon and Lurgan Tarry. They disclosed no evidence whatsoever, and Martin has consistently denied their allegations. If he has been caught doing something, he should be charged and put on trial.
As it stands, he is lingering in prison for nothing.I met with John O’Dowd (British Minister at Stormont) a while ago to discuss the case. We would like to see Sinn Fein pushing it more. They are in government, so they must be able to do something. At the end of the day, this is an issue which could potentially affect some of their own members."
Another brother, Peter Corey, said: “He is being held because of his political beliefs, no other reason. He has always been a republican, and he has never renounced that, but he has done nothing wrong," Martin’s younger brother Joe, spoke about the the day he was taken away.“They came to the door at around 6am, There was about twelve of them standing there when I answered the door. They asked for Martin and told me the British Viceroyal had revoked his licence. They gave no reason for this. There was no struggle. He just got up and walked out with them. The brought him to Maghaberry, where he has been ever since.”
Sean Corey said: “We thought those days were over, but seemingly not.Internment is here again, but by other means. They are trying to break him. They have no charges against him and he is wasting away in prison. That’s enough to break any man.”
Provisional Sinn Fein's British Minister John O’Dowd called for his “immediate release, Sinn Féin are absolutely opposed to the revocation of licenses, which is tantamount to internment and goes against the rules of natural justice. The imprisonment of anyone without proper process is unacceptable and wrong.Like everyone else, Martin Corey is entitled to due process, if there is a charge and evidence against him he is entitled to have an opportunity to present a defence, if there is no charge he should be released. No charge has been brought against Martin, so he should be released immediately.Sinn Féin has raised and will continue to raise this case with the authorities seeking his immediate release.”
Provisional Sinn Fein's British Minister John O’Dowd call, sounds sincere enough but the reality is, that he is a British Minister in a Power Sharing Executive set up under a Peace Process, that has lost considerable credibility in a still, sectarian, scum, state, with fascist policing and an unelected English Viceroyal, issuing SS dictats, to an English Chief of police enforcing neo-colonial repression. The south of Ireland is equally repressive but that's another disgraceful story. Provisional Sinn Fein seem to be effective enough in getting their own people released but when it comes to competing traditional, senior republicans, their activity seems remarkably similar to De Valera. Would the Provisionals hang Martin, without a charge or trial too or will they simply let the veteran die of old age interned without trial or charge?
Up to 10,000 humanitarian people of the progressive Ireland, protested internment in Belfast earlier this month, with speakers stating bluntly, that Internment is simply unacceptable in both parts of Ireland, in this day and age. They demanded in speeches after the march, an immediate end to this continuous, politically perverse generational practice of oppression, in both parts of the Island. It is simply not acceptable in any civilized society, and the participation in Government, of people claiming to represent the ideals of fallen freedom fighters, is treachery extreme while purveying a Peace Process without Due Process or Justice is Oxymoronic.
