British doctors working in Gaza have described the territory as a ?slaughterhouse,? where the patients they are treating are severely malnourished.

McCabe is right, but the debates on the Home Rule Bill in 1912-14 show that even the proposed Home Ruled Ireland was going to be poorer as a result. The Brits sweetened it by offering to make up any deficits for the first 6 years. After 1919 you can add in the costs of sovereignty (embassies, armies) and the independence and civil wars, and the exodus of thousands of richer types, and you had a recipe for poverty. We have a lot to think about on the run-up to the 1916 centenary.
“We make no apology for what has been done, and what we are doing in Dublin,” he said, amidst cheers. “They talk about Home Rule, but that will not solve the poverty problem, though it will help to give us the machinery which we shall have to use to get rid of this great sore in the body politic. But that was a long term problem surely..ansentee landlordism...now its tax ex-isles offshore. Mobile capital preying on the island population and extracting its wealth. Now they live in virtual space, and they will syphon even the former loci of ops.
