Guth Gafa International Documentary Film Festival Guth Gafa (meaning ‘captive voice’) is Ireland’s only independent documentary film festival. We focus on showcasing the latest award-winning International and Irish documentary films on thought-provoking subjects, and promoting the art of great story-telling, through film, to rural Irish communities. The festival returns this year in not one, but two magical locations, in Counties Donegal and Meath. It will get underway on Saturday, October 25th and Sunday October 26th in the unspoilt 17th century village of Malin, Co Donegal, its spiritual home. Over the following weekend, November 1st and 2nd, it will move to the magnificent and tranquil grounds of the 18th century Headfort House, a hidden gem close to the historic village of Kells in Co Meath. The objective of bringing a second location to the festival is about creating opportunities for as wide an audience as possible to see human rights and social issue documentary films. Documentaries screened arouse great debate and discussion, and Guth Gafa’s trademark of inviting all filmmakers to present their films and discuss them with the audiences, makes the festival a unique experience for film lovers. There are few film festivals in Europe quite like Guth Gafa. Every year, the festival brings an intimate but intense hotbed of documentary film to Ireland. With family screenings and workshops running in parallel, the 8th Guth Gafa promises to be another great festival. The Judicial Review of the Minister of Justice’s refusal to grant Michael McKevitt enhanced remission was scheduled to commence this morning in Court 4 of the High Court. However, upon arrival at court McKevitt’s legal team was informed that his case was being removed from the immediate hearing list and being placed instead on the Administration List – with a new date yet to be scheduled. Michael McKevitt’s legal team protested that today’s date had been scheduled by a High Court judge before the summer break; that the case concerned the potential unlawful detention of a prisoner and a citizen’s deprivation of liberty, and that the case should be given priority and should commence as previously scheduled. read full story / add a comment

The rhetoric by the Sinn Fein, the Anti Austerity Alliance and the People Before Profit Alliance featuring on RTE's Prime Time programme amounts to nothing but illusion. Their election candidates showed no understanding of the need for revolution. Their rhetoric suggested that capitalism can be managed or reformed to the benefit of the working class by effectively taxing the rich and not the working class. Indeed the entire show confined itself to suggestions as to how to reform capitalism in one way or another. In that way the participants sought to effectively defend the capitalist system. Essentially all contributors were essentially advocating bourgeois politics. If the Socialist Party and the Socialist Workers Party were genuinely revolutionary they would have challenged RTE and its other contributors by advocating the need for revolution. read full story / add a comment

Shannonwatch welcomes the visit to Shannon Airport by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Public Service Oversight and Petitions. The visit which took place on October 2nd was a follow-up to a petition by Shannonwatch earlier this year. The petition called for the Government to investigate the use of Shannon Airport and Irish airspace for the transit of US armed troops, munitions and other war material, as well as for the refuelling of CIA-associated aircraft involved in extraordinary rendition. During their visit to Shannon, representatives of the Committee met with members of the Gardai including Chief Superintendent John Kerin and with airport officials before meeting again with Shannonwatch. They were informed that about 40,000 US troops had gone through Shannon so far this year. However Shannonwatch understands that airport officials said that US troops were not essential to the economics of Shannon Airport as they contribute relatively little, and that civilian passengers contribute far more with shopping, car parking and so on. read full story / add a comment

They are all bourgeois nationalist parties competing for power within the capitalist system. We are all familiar with the monstrous crimes that have been carried out by the Catholic hierarchy in Ireland, the slave labor in the Magadlene prison laundries, the physical and sexual abuse in the children's prisons.The victims have to be given compensation. Not by the taxpayers but from the vast wealth of the Catholic church. More generally responsibility has to be allotted for this. The Irish Penal Reform Trust (IPRT), Ireland’s leading penal reform campaign organisation, has today (Wednesday, 17 September 2014) warmly welcomed the publication of the final report of the Strategic Review on Penal Policy as a blueprint for a fairer and more effective penal system. IPRT endorses the vast majority of the recommendations, and urges the Minister for Justice and Equality to consider their implementation in full.
