News from down the country

category national | environment | news report author Saturday December 12, 2009 12:18author by Contaminated Crow Report this post to the editors

A mast, a quarry, a compost facility and oil exploration off Clare

A spokesperson for 120 residents who are within one kilometre of a proposed mast in Drumfries, Co. Donegal, has said 'We will resist them every step of the way', while calling on Donegal County Council to 'revoke this unlawful planning decision immediately' and on Tetra to 'withdraw from the highly controversial site'. (Derry Journal 4/12/09, p. 3).

An Bord Pleanala has overturned the granting of planning permission to Goode Concrete Ltd. for an extension to a sand and gravel quarry at Ford de Fyne, near Clonalvey, Co. Meath, following appeals by local residents. (Meath Chronicle 5/12/09, p. 8).

Clare county counillors were invited to attend a meeting called by Foynes and District Community Council regarding a composting facility in Foynes, Co. Limerick, which An Bord Pleanala has permitted, but the meeting was cancelled due to a local tragedy. (Clare Champion 4/12/09, p. 5).

Around 40 people attended the official launch of Gort Shell to Sea last week at which Maura Harrington warned Clare might face problems similar to those at Rossport, Co. Mayo, resulting from exploration activities by Providence Resources off the west coast of Clare. To contact the group ring 087-2031764 or email shelltoseagort@gmail.com. (Clare People 1/12/09, p. 26).

Apologies for the late arrival of last week's news but the Crow is moving down the country and finding it difficult to get a landline, much less a net connection. This week's news from down the country will probably be put up on Monday or Tuesday.
