The Covid Inquiry has allowed itself to degenerate into a cudgel to flog the Tory government of Boris Johnson. But an inquiry that instantiates a lie is worse than no inquiry at all, says Will Adie.

Community Ensures Success of Dundrum Park Public Workshop

category dublin | environment | press release author Monday February 02, 2009 21:14author by Brian Guckian Report this post to the editors

Follow-up Meeting for February 17th

STRONG support by local people in the Dundrum area ensured the success of the Public Workshop on the innovative alternative development proposal for the Old Dundrum Shopping Centre that would provide Dundrum with a badly-needed new amenity and "green lung", held at Taney Parish Centre on Tuesday, January 27th.

PRESS RELEASE

For Release 30/1/2009

Organiser of the event, local sustainable development campaigner Brian Guckian, said that every person present made a contribution, and generated a wealth of creative ideas which could be implemented on the site, as follows:

Allotments, Amphitheatre, Aquarium, Arboretum, Arts Venue, Bandstand, Benches, Bowling Alley, Butterfly farm, Café / meeting place, Community centre, Community enterprise / resource centre, Community garden, Craft enterprise centre, Craft village, Eco Inn, Farmer’s Market, Festival space, Flea Market, Fountain, Frog ponds, Jogging / Exercise path, Lake, Library, Market along lines of the English Market in Cork, Mulitcultural garden, Nature Corner for children, Office spaces for local businesses, Orchard, Organic garden, Outdoor concert venue, Paved area with seating and flower beds, Pedestrianised spaces, Performance space, Playground, Reinstatement of Stephen Roche monument, Renewable energy centre, Seating, Seats for old people, Showcase ecological house, Skate Park, Small artisan shops, Statues and Monuments by Artists, Sun dial, Tennis courts, Theme Park along lines of Tivoli Gardens in Copenhagen, Walkways.

Mr. Guckian said that a common theme that emerged at the Workshop was that Dundrum had lost its heart through inappropriate large-scale construction and lack of amenities for people, and that there was a need for a different kind of development for the area.

The event also provided a Forum where the general planning situation in Dundrum was discussed openly and productively.

The work completed at the event was currently being collated and would be displayed at a follow-up meeting to be held at the Taney Parish centre (Overend Room) on Tuesday February 17th at 8pm. The meeting would also chart the way forward for the process initiated at the event.

Mr. Guckian thanked all those who had given of their time to attend and participate in what was a democratic community planning initiative. He also extended thanks to a number of public representatives who attended, and said the event had attracted interest from a broad section of the community, including those who had lodged formal objections to the current plans for the Old Dundrum Shopping Centre site.

More information on the ongoing Dundrum Community Park development proposal is available from Mr. Guckian at railprojects@eircom.net.
