No information on whereabouts of Javanmir Moradi and Taha Azadi

category international | worker & community struggles and protests | news report author Wednesday May 21, 2008 18:55author by pat c Report this post to the editors

Iranian Intelligence Ministry Disappear Trade Unionists

Since being told by the Intelligence Ministry in Bushehr on 12 May that Javanmir Moradi and Taha Azadi have been transferred to the Intelligence Ministry in Kermanshah, their families’ attempts to find out where they are being held have been fruitless.

On 18 May Fouzieh Khalesi [Moradi’s wife] approached the Intelligence Ministry she was violently attacked by Ministry officers who tried to arrest her. This was resisted by those accompanying her, which resulted in Fouzieh getting an injured leg. Several of those with her were beaten with rifle butts.

Javanmir Moradi and Taha Azadi are members of the executive committee of the Free Union of Iranian Workers. They were working in Asaluye in slave-like conditions and have committed no crime apart trying to celebrate May Day.

In view of the refusal to reveal where Javanmir Moradi and Taha Azadi are being held and the threat to arrest members of their families, the FUIW believe that the lives of Javanmir Moradi and Taha Azadi are in danger. The FUIW hold the the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran responsible for the consequences of any physical or psychological harm to their colleagues.

The FUIW appeal to all labour and human rights organisations to take urgent action to protest at the persecution of Javanmir Moradi, Taha Azadi and their families, and call for the immediate and unconditional release of Javanmir Moradi and Taha Azadi and all jailed workers and social activists.

The Free Union of Iranian Workers may be contacted at k.ekhraji@gmail.com

Here is the text of a letter sent by Senator David Norris to the Ayetollah & to the President of Iran.

Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei,
Office of the Supreme Leader,
Islamic Republic Street,
Shahid Keshvar Doust Street,
Tehran,
Iran.

22 May 2008

Dear Ayatollah,

I am greatly concerned at reports reaching Europe about the detention ofJavanmir Moradi and Taha Azadi who are members of the executivecommittee of the Free Union of Iranian Workers. Any democracy and indeedany decent society will permit the development of the representative ofworkers. Apparently their offence was to celebrate May Day which wouldnot appear to me or to any person who I respect to constitute a crime. Iwould like therefore to protest at the treatment of these people and thebrutalisation of their families and to call for their immediate andunconditional release and that of all jailed workers and socialactivists. I look forward to a reply.

Yours sincerely,

Taha Azadi, a member of the executive committee of the Free Union of Workers in Iran has been summoned to court for the second time. Mr. Azadi was to appear in court on February 16, 2009. He is charged with propaganda against the system. Mr. Azadi, along with Javanmir Moradi (also on the FUWI EC), were arrested in May for participating in May Day events and spent 47 days in prison and endured physical and emotional torture. Taha Azadi and Javanmir Moradi, both member of board of directors of Free Union of Workers in Iran, were released on a $10,000 bail. They were arrested in Asalooyeh - Booshehr on May Day and were jailed for 47 days.

Still awaiting an update on what happened at the court.
