Anti-Horse Racing Demonstration

category kilkenny | animal rights | event notice author Sunday April 20, 2008 20:09author by Laura Broxson - National Animal Rights Associationauthor email naracampaigns at gmail dot comauthor address PO Box 11019, Dublin 2 Report this post to the editors

BAN HORSE RACING!

Hi,

We'll be having an anti-horse racing demonstration on Sunday 27th April, at Gowran Park Race Course in Gowran, Co. Kilkenny.

This is a very important animal rights issue, which we feel urgently needs to be highlighted in this country. 15,000 horses are bred, between Ireland and the U.K., each year for the racing industry. Two thirds of whom are killed every year - simply because they aren't ''good enough'' to make it on to become racers. Those that do make it are forced to endure a life of pain, stress and misery - just because of peoples' addiction to gambling - and the apparent need most ''people'' have to take advantage of other, more vulnerable, species.

The racing world is another ''forgotten'' industry of cruelty - with events seen only as a harmless, fun day-out. Well it's time the Irish people became aware of the truth, or at least forced to acknowledge it!

So please, for all the horses that will be used and abused on Sunday, join our protest and be a voice for the voiceless.

HOW TO GET THERE: We'll be meeting at 9.30am at Busaras, and we will be getting the 004 Bus to Gowran at 10am (it's a 2 hour bus journey - and the fare is only 15euro return).

This will be an all-day event (we probably won't be back in Dublin until about 8pm), so remember to bring snacks and sandwiches for yourself. And please let us know if you're coming.

Thanks,

National Animal Rights Association

Please supply sources for the following claims you use as a means to rally support:

1- Two thirds of [15,000] whom are killed every year - simply because they aren't ''good enough'' to make it on to become racers.
2 - Those that do make it are forced to endure a life of pain, stress and misery - just because of peoples' addiction to gambling - and the apparent need most ''people'' have to take advantage of other, more vulnerable, species.

And please supply sources that have actually evidenced these claims, not links to similar unsubstantiated claims as is often done where no evidence exists.

Having grown up around the racing industry, and while there are many, many goings on in the industry to be genuinely concerned about, what you write appears little more than hyperbole and lies. I'll revise that position once evidence is put forward - the burden of proof is carried by you, the complainant.

If you wish for your campaign to have some success you would do well to inform yourself before seeking to recruit people in support of your campaign. What was written here will do little to garner the support of thinking people in general, let alone those who have some clue of the workings of the industry. And while I am very sympathetic to many animal rights activists and activities, including campaigns focused on the racing industry, I find myself deterred by ill-informed lobbying such as this.
