Woke attitudes have been blamed for the failure to save Sara Sharif from being tortured to death by her father, with officials failing to check under her hijab for injuries and neighbours afraid to report concerns.

What's the point of COP30? Every year thousands fly in to proclaim the urgent need to cut CO2 emissions. And every year global emissions go up. It's the definition of insanity, says Paul Homewood.

Domino's Pizza: Delivering Low Pay

category national | worker & community struggles and protests | news report author Friday December 21, 2007 12:38author by Socialist Youth - SY Report this post to the editors

See our Website! www.SocialistYouth.wordpress.com

Recently Domino's pizza store workers in Wolverhampton and Derby earned negative wages after working for a month. Bosses had charged them extortionate amounts for rent and insurance to cheat them out of their wages. It leaves no doubt as to how Domino’s makes their £700 million every year.

To highlight this scandal Socialist Youth in Belfast organised a stall outside a local Domino’s on the Antrim Road on a busy Friday night. We received a warm response from customers to our leaflets. The response of Domino’s however was to ring the police. There is nothing criminal about campaigning for an £8 an hour minimum wage, but the actions of Domino’s in England should be considered criminal

Many passers-by were shocked to hear of such exploitation and were very happy to sign our petition against low pay. More activity outside Domino’s has been planned in the next few weeks to ensure Domino’s doesn’t get away with treating other workers like slaves.

However Domino’s is not just one bad apple. It is has become the norm for fast food chains to hire migrant and young workers and pay them as little as possible.

There is a lot of anger against this and the many other examples of low pay that we have found. This anger can grow as the pace of attacks from the bosses increases. In order to make more and more profit companies like Domino’s will seek to continually drive down wages.

When Domino’s workers got organised in a union and began to fight for their rights, they were able to hold the bosses back in their attacks. If all workers in the fast food industry united and struggled for higher wages and better conditions employers can be forced to give concessions.

Dominos drivers get paid cash in hand. So you cant actually track how much they earn. Good drivers earn a good bit. Bad drivers can lose money if keep making stupid mistakes. I get paid minimum wage. My undertanding of the issue is that the problem isnt that workers arent getting paid enough, but that the gov doesnt like how they are been giving the wages.

Pay rate in the north dublin outlets, is €5.70 an hour and €1.50 a delivery. If the driver is good this works out to be over mnimum wage. Although if the driver happeneds by chance, to be keep on being sent to the outskits of the area, then they are not going to be paid well that night. The pay in Dominos is very random.

There was a bit in one of the local papers here promoting the new Dominos and bragging hugely about supporting the Special Olmpics by sponsoring a team. This is first I heard abotu the low pay. They are obviously pushing the compassion buttons to get people to buy their products,

delivery rate is 1.2 euros . and dominos policy is to give 1 delivery per run even if there is something on the way. average run is 8-9 km return city driving is about 10 liters per 100 km. petrol 1.45 euros. so the average price per run for the petrol only (without car exploitation cost-oil, brake pads, mileage...and other running costs) is 1.30 at least. and dont forget the delivery charge is not going for the driver , it suppose to cover delivery cost...suppose to... but....thats why dominos reporting profits...
