Ist Anniversary of Litvinenko Murder![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Alexander Litvinenko was poisoned by agents of the Russian Government and died a year ago on November 23rd 2006. Alexander Litvinenko was a lieutenant-colonel in the Russian Secret Service. He fought in the first war in Chechnya before being appointed to the KGB/FSB. Sasha was at one time put in charge of protecting Russian billionaire Boris Berezovsky. In November 1998, he publicly accused his superiors of ordering the assassination of Berezovsky. He campaigned on behalf of the Russian and Chechen people and repeatedly exposed government corruption. He revealed how the FSB and Putin were responsible for the Moscow Apartment bombings used as excuse for the second Russian terrorist attack on the Chechen people and many other terrorist activities including the murder of journalist Anna Politkovskaya. He was illegally imprisoned and threaths were made to kill him or his son. After fleeing to Britain with his family he died, aged 44, in University College Hospital, London on November 23rd 2006. It was found that he had been poisoned with radioactive polonium-210, which was traced back to Russia. Sasha converted to Islam before his death and a funeral reading was given at the Central London mosque. His friend Ahmed Zakayev, Chechin Prime Minister in exile, attended along with other Muslim clerics. He was buried in Highgate Cemetery, London but before his death he expressed his wish to be reburied among the Chechen people he loved. Inna lillahi wa inna ilahi raji’un. |
