Revolution in Latin America

Two people from the movements in Latin America will be speaking on Friday 20th April at 8pm in the ATGWU hall on middle abbey St. The meeting is hosted by the Socialist Workers Party.

The speakers are:

Teresa Zepeda Torres, coordinator of Alianza Cívica Chiapas, Mexico.

Alianza Cívica was founded in 1994 as initiative of a group of citizens and civil organisations to take part in the observation of the federal elections in 1994. The organization works today towards an active participation of all citizen in political decision making processes. Alianza Cívica promotes the construction of a conscious and critical civil society seeking for alternatives to the political, economic and social development which are sustainable and of great benefit the whole community in rural as well as in urban areas. Alianza Cívica was the leading organisation in the fight against water privatisation in San Cristobal. Teresa Zepeda participated as 'expert in local water struggles' in the alternative meeting to the world water forum in Mexico in summer 2006. As consequence of Alianza Cívica's active involvement in the local and international fight against water privatisation, the organisation is at the moment in the process of building up a network of young people as water advocates in Chiapas.

Marco Llanos, Red UNITAS, El Alto, Bolivia

Marco is a community activist and was actively involved in the water struggle in El Alto, Bolivia,in 2005 and participated also in the gas war in 2003 and 2005. He represents the voices from the ground and has excellent insider knowledge of Boliva's social movements, political patterns, changes and shifts. Marco is currently involved in grassroots media work and outreach programmes in El Alto. His work for the 'Development of Local Power' project of the UNITAS network consists of supporting popular organisations with information to enable them to demand their rights. Marco is a member of an indigenous community in El Alto.
