Book Launch and Public Talk

The Corporate Take-Over of Ireland

Book Launch and Public Talk, The Corporate Take Over of Ireland by Dr. Kieran Allen, UCD Sociology Department.
Tuesday 3rd April, 8.00pm Victoria Hotel, Patrick Street, Cork.

People Power against the Corporations.

A government by the people for the people is an ideal of Irish politics.. But it is fast disappearing as corporations take more control. They have only one goal-profit-and use the buzz words like "competitiveness" and "flexibility"to make all of society serve it. Major corporations such as Microsoft view Ireland as an Atlantic tax haven which offers light state regulation. They want the country to become a bridgehead for the American way inside the EU.

"The Corporate Take Over of Ireland" examines the effects on Irish life and shows how democratic decision making has been subverted by money.

Efforts to ban advertising to children and to restrict promotion of alcohol have been prevented by large global corporations. A new medical apartheid is being created in health as huge US health corporations stand ready to move into the private health care market. Waste collection is no longer organised as a public service but is being turned into big business. State enterprises such as Aer Lingus and Eircom have been handed over to private investors.

"The Corporate Take Over of Ireland" calls for a new movement of resistance that will put people before profit and bring about more democracy.

Dr Kieran Allen lectures in the Department of Sociology, University College Dublin, and has published widely, including his book "The Celtic Tiger: The Myth of Social Partnership"

This meeting is being hosted by the Cork Branch, Socialist Workers Party, on Tuesday 3rd April, at 8.00pm in the Victoria Hotel, Patrick Street, Cork.

All Welcome.

This is getting stranger and stranger. I thought that Kieran Allen was proud of his SWP membership but there is no mention of it here. Surely the Cork SWP wouldn't try and con naive Corkonians into believing that KA is an independent academic who just happens to agree 100% with the SWP.

Perhaps a Cork branch of PBPA is being planned. Its odd enough that the SWP are dropping the S word, but now SWP is evn being dropped by their leaders.

True, this post may not publish a scan of his SWP membership card - but if you look at the top of the page you will notice that it was posted by a self-declared SWPer.

1 + 1 = ?

Funny thing is, years back I asked around for a good book to read about the realities of the Celtic Tiger and some of KA's most bloodsworn enemies did recommend his "The Celtic Tiger: The Myth of Social Partnership"

I read it, and it is pretty good - it remains on my bookshelf and wasn't sold off to Oxfam for beer money.

I noticed that. Its just that KA was on a radio chatshow last week, not as a member of the SWP but as a sociologist. Its getting to be a bit of a habit. Its not too late for KA to become a PBPA candidate.

Joe Moore might try the same. Last time out he ran as a CABT candidate. This time he might try the PBPA label. Hes a good guy, with a good reputation. I hope the SWP don't ruin it for him.

For the record I was never a candidate in either a local or general election. Neither have I any intention of ever running.

I think that all socialists - real and so-called should be fighting for a fairer distribution of wealth.

THE DESTRUCTION OF CAPATILISM IS JUST NOT GOING TO HAPPEN.

Socialists from all over the country should be exposing the sell-out of Trade Union Leaders with Forked Tongues who have their own narrow self-interest at heart.

TRADE UNIONS ARE THE EMPLOYERS POLICEMEN.

Ordinary members should beware of them and at the first opportunity get rid of them.

Capitalism has got this country by the throat and will not be dislodged. Instead of going for the impossible go for the achievable and clean up Trade Unions and make them SOCIALIST.

WORKERS SHOULD BE RUNNING TRADE UNIONS, NOT THE EMPLOYERS AND GOVERNMENT.

Socialists can wave the Red Flag and condemn capitalism until they're blue in the face but it won't make an iota of difference. AND, actually, this is what the employers want to hear because they know they've nothing to fear.

Cleaning up the Trade Unions and especially ICTU would go a long way in achieving Workers Rights. Socialists should set their sights a little lower and begin with the soft underbelly of capitalism - The Trade Union Policemen.

To appease the die-hard socialists who demand the Destruction of Capitalism, knowing its never going to happen, then go and get drunk, the cleaning up of trade unions can be seen as the First Step to ACHIEVING THEIR GOAL.
