ASSEMBLE 2.00PM AT FORTUNESTOWN SCHOOL, DOWN FROM LIDL, CITYWEST (http://irishantiwar.org). Feeder bus shuttle from Red Cow LUAS Car Park from 1.30pm
To all activists and friends.
We are not alone.
Hundreds of thousands of people marched in cities throughout the world last Saturday to demonstrate against this monstrous war and occupation of Iraq and against a possible attack on Iran; in Australia, Chile, Turkey, South Korea, Malaysia, Greece, Italy, Spain …… and not least in the USA. In Washington tens of thousands of activists, war veterans, politicians and celebrities marched to the Pentagon in freezing conditions to vent their anger at the neo-con warlords inside. Many busloads of people were turned away due to bad weather. Big marches also took place in other US cities.
We stand in solidarity with these US citizens who demand an end to this brutal war.
Do not be fooled by the media focus on the sectarian civil strife in Iraq and the presentation of the occupying forces as trying to keep the peace.
The invasion and occupation by foreign troops have fuelled sectarian strife. It has been an appalling waste of human life for the people of Iraq with estimates of the dead now reaching as high as 650,000. In addition over 3,000 US soldiers have been killed. The Pentagon admits the monthly cost of the war is $8.4 billion.
The only way to end this carnage is for the occupying forces to leave Iraq and the whole middle-east and to allow the people there to decide their own future.
Join us this Saturday to vent your anger at the complicity of the Irish Government in supporting this war through its facilitation at Shannon Airport of the US Military Machine and CIA torture flights.
Speakers include; Patricia Mc Kenna (Green Party), Aongus O Snodaigh (Sein Fein), Councillor Declan Bree, Labour Youth, SIPTU, Independent politicians, Brid Smith (SWP), Glenda Cimino (US Citizens in Ireland Against the War) David Norris (Senator), Robert Ballagh (Artist) and Dr. Abdullah Sayegh (Iraqi Citizen).
Performers include; Mary Coughlan (Singer), Róisín Elsafty (Singer), Mary O Malley (Poet) + others.
We will march from Fortunestown to the gates of Citywest Hotel (approx 1 mile) where we will hold a rally that includes;
- speeches and performances.
- naming of the Iraqi dead
- dropping of dolls at hotel gates to symbolise the killing of Iraqi children
- a silent die-in outside the Hotel Gates (weather pending)
- laying of headstones outside hotel gates
Please bring along home-made placards, dolls, banners, peace flags, rain gear (just in case of showers) etc. Lets make this a colourful, noisy demonstration against the wanton waste of this brutal war.
