Reform is favourite to win the Runcorn and Helsby by-election, overturning Labour's 14,700 majority. Why? It might have something to do with having the nation's third-highest number of asylum seekers, says Steven Tucker.

RPAG Condemns Ongoing Harassment Of Members

category international | rights, freedoms and repression | press release author Wednesday October 11, 2006 20:48author by Seán Ó Murchú - Republican Prisoners Action Group Report this post to the editors

A member of the Republican Prisoners’ Action Group (RPAG) was detained along the roadside in Newry for a period of two-and-a-half hours under the so-called "Prevention of Terrorism Act", causing himself and others travelling with him to miss a meeting which was scheduled to discuss the ongoing protest for political status in Maghaberry Gaol.

When asked whether he was under arrest, the RUC replied that he was not. However, they stated that if he left he would be placed under arrest. His place of work was also searched.

The RPAG condemns the ongoing harassment of our members by the RUC and their political masters. Such incidents will not prevent us from highlighting the plight of the Republican POWs in Maghaberry Gaol or from seeking the implementation of their five demands and the granting of full political status.

Despite the announcement by Mr. Adams who is in Scotland with Paisley (Minister for the Orange Silly Walks Party), and promoting the miraculous conversion of the RUC/PSNI from a force with an appalling human rights record into a suddenly (in the flick of a name change) a respectable and acceptable police force; we are presented above with a reality-check report of the continuing harassment and the unlawful detention of Irish people by the PSNI who are hell bent on preventing Irish people from attending meetings.

If Mr. Adams finds the PSNI an acceptable police force all of a sudden (well for this week anyway), then why is it that ÓSF are continuously highlighting the brutal tactics and harassment that they suffer at the hands of the PSNI? It is indeed a sick joke!

I have no doubt that the RPAG will continue with their efforts in highlighting the plight of the Maghaberry prisoners until the prisoners have been granted their five basic demands and they will not be deterred in their efforts by any action of the PSNI.
