Strategy workshop for peace activists

category dublin | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Tuesday May 23, 2006 22:30author by Coilín ÓhAiseadha - Cosantóirí na Síochánaauthor email aat2004 at mail dot dkauthor phone 086 060 3818 Report this post to the editors

Strategy workshop facilitated by Kieran Clifford
St Nicholas of Myra parish centre, corner of Francis St./Carman's Hall, Dublin 8
Sunday 28 May, 10.30 am - 5 pm

Because of the urgency of the current international situation - ongoing threats to attack Iran, recent Israeli military activity at Shannon, increasing traffic of troops through Shannon on their way to Iraq and the stubborn refusal of the Irish government to search for prisoners on aircraft used by the CIA - the strategy subgroup of the Peace Network, formed at a recent meeting of the network, has decided to hold our first strategy workshop this coming Sunday 28 May.

This will be a fairly simple, tightly structured workshop, designed to get people using various thinking tools to analyse the current situation and mobilise resources. This may include:
* definition of visions and strategic objectives
* identification of key players who have the power to give us what we want
* mobilisation of resources to influence key players
* planning more strategy conferences

We will not necessarily attempt to devise a single strategy for the whole peace movement, as it seems likely that different groups will go on devising a diversity of different strategies. However, we think it likely that different groups will at least share certain visions and strategic objectives, e.g peace and justice, and the demilitarisation of Shannon.

Following this first workshop, we would like to hold a series of conferences to discuss strategy around the country, e.g. in Shannon, Cork, Belfast and Rossport. These can be organised in such a way as to mobilise people and enhance coordination around the country.

The workshop will be facilitated by a very competent and experienced activist from Amnesty, a woman by the name of Kieran Clifford.

Please give notice to Coilín if you wish to participate. Contact details above.

Might the name be wrong? Also a suggestion, 10.30 am is a bit of an early start on a Sunday. A lot of the people who you would like to attract are also active in other things. They are likely to have been involved in some action or event on the Saturaday as well. You might get a better attendance if you had the meeting 1 pm to 5 pm.

You can do a lot of discussing and come to a lot of conclusions in 4 hours.

That's her name all right. Funnily enough.

Thanks for your suggestion about the time. I will consider that if I ever hold an event on a Sunday again.

Best,
Coilín.
