Save TaraSkryne Valley Group Welcome Release of Rossport 5 / Open Letter from Woodland League

category national | history and heritage | press release author Thursday October 06, 2005 10:54author by via eeekkkk Report this post to the editors

Press Release

The Save the TaraSkryne Valley Group wish to welcome the fact that the
Rossport Five have been released from Cloverhill Prison. We fully
support the people of Mayo in their struggle against the Government and
the multi-national Shell.

The Group also wishes to thank Shelltosea for their very public support
of our cause in saving the Gabhra Valley from the proposed M3. Along
with many other groups in Ireland at present we are all fighting the
same battle against this present Government -– to protect our heritage
and natural resources for future generations.

Some recent actions of the Minister and the Taoiseach are to be welcomed
– the allocation of major funding to the Battle of the Boyne site,
saving Woodstown and the Taoiseach announcement that historic houses
will receive some state funding. It is bewildering however that the Tara
area and the Gabhra Valley in particular are been sacrificed on the
altar of Mammon. Tara is quintessentially Irish – why is our native
Irish site seen as fair game? Even the Orange Lodge wishes to see the
Boyne Valley turned into a World Heritage Site.

The Gabhra Valley, the presumed site of the last battle of Fianna, is
under direct attack by the proposed M3. Fianna Fáil are turning their
backs on everything that their names stands for: Fianna from the Fenians
and Fál from the Lia Fáil that stands on top of the Hill at Tara. Fianna
Fáil fail the Fianna.

It is not too late to admit that a huge mistake has been made in the
route of the proposed M3. We call on Fianna Fáil backbenchers and the
general membership to put pressure on the Government ministers to stop
this ill-considered venture and to comment on the serious alternatives that are now in
place before they face the wrath of the public in the next election.

From the Woodland League Network
The Woodland League would like to salute and acknowledge the integrity, bravery and commitment of the Rossport Five, at a time when so many Irish people are compromised or have sold out on their communities, where corruption is considered normal, where wealth is given precedence over health and human beings are reduced to simple economic values as consumers, where economists (who are meagre money quacks operating in an imperfect science that ignores social and environmental impacts in its blind calculations) are elevated to high status’ in the spiritual vacuum that is Ireland and the Irish economy.
OPEN LETTER TO THE ROSSPORT FIVE

5th October 2005.

The sacrifice and subsequent release of the Rossport Five draws a line in the sand which challenges the rot in Irish life and inspires the multitude of other communities under siege by big business, aided and abetted by the elected representatives, the supposed servants of the people.

Thank you on behalf of the many communities and groups we represent and assist.

Always remember the old Druidic triad of Éicse, Fior agus Dúlra (Wisdom, Truth and Nature) – the three candles that illuminate any darkness.
