Opium Crop figures in for 2004

category international | worker & community struggles and protests | other press author Monday August 01, 2005 14:07author by % Report this post to the editors

87% of the world's opium grown in 2004 was grown in Afghanistan.

Afghanistan has succeeded in growing more opium than in any other recorded year.

131,000 hectares of the country supplied the raw material for heroin addicts everywhere, this is an area a little smaller than the size of Leitrim, or if you prefer a little smaller than both counties Carlow and Louth together.

one gramme of Heroin at street level purity of 40% has a value of 60€.

Afghanistan is thus growing the most valuable crop on earth, not only because it grows well there, but also because the tax and duty paid on the crops provides hospitals, schools, infrastructure and gives the disillusioned kids something to do of a weekend and well out of hell & brimstone's way over the border in the madrasses of pakistan.

Thank God, and the UN for that.

its well known that the CIA run most of the drug rackets in the world.

If they arent involved directly they are allowing it to happen and being paid a lot to turn a blind eye and perhaps give some protection where needed.

Billions in cash is then laundered through the US stock exchange

Have a nice day, be a good catholic

It wasn't the UN who invaded Afghanistan, armed and financed the so-called Northern Alliance warlords to reconquer the country, and crush the people already on their knees.

Christian Science Monitor and Human RIghts Watch kept reporting from Afghnistan once everyone else (but UNICAL) had forgotten it again. Check out their websites.

The ammount produced is not the problem. it's the fact that it's illegal and addictive and is the root of so much crime. that's the problem. What makes this a problem is not the growers but the users.
