"It will be remembered as the greatest mass delusion in the history of the world ? that CO2, the life of plants, was deemed for a time to be a deadly poison." So said Prof Richard Lindzen. He's right, says Chris Morrison.

Shakespeare is the key to understanding Trump, says Prof James Alexander. Trump is not system-politics, is not deep-state politics. Trump is court politics. And Shakespeare is our guide to the flamboyance of the court.

Whatever is going on in Los Angeles, Western media want you to know that it is peaceful, okay? And any violence is due to unjustified escalation by the evil dictator in the White House. It's definitely not a riot.

Workshop - Rights Are Revolution

category national | rights, freedoms and repression | event notice author Thursday May 29, 2014 09:38author by Deborah - Vegan Information Project Report this post to the editors

a consensus-based workshop

rights are revolution - a consensus-based workshop on the theory of rights, from an anarchists and radical feminist perspective

The Outhouse
Capel Street
Dublin

4th June 2014
7pm to 9pm

this workshop will, as usual, be in two parts -

1) a short talk on the radical feminist and anarchist challenges to a rights-based philosophy, and how these theories are not inherently incompatible and can be part of a single revolutionary challenge to the established order. optional q&a session to follow

2) a consensus-based workshop where we will explore some of the following issues, through discussion and practical exercises

a) the distinction between moral and legal rights

b) what 'rights' have meant as part of a patriarchal capitalist society, and what a real understanding of rights could mean as the moral baseline of our struggle

c) the rhetoric of rights - how a rights-based position can inform the language we use when engaging with others, and the revolutionary possibilities offered by this

d) rights vs needs - an exploration of the feminist ‘ethic of care’ position, how it differs from the concept of moral rights, an if and how the two could co-exist in our movement

e) where have the ‘rights’ gone in animal rights? - an exploration of what rights-based vegan campaigns would look like, and how they would change the currently inconsistent and confused face of our movement

we will also hopefully have time for a practical section on this last issue, where we can share ideas on rights-based theory, and its potential in practice to change what we do as advocates, from the language and slogans we use, to the actions we organise an take part in

thanx as always from the facilitator to all her creative and thoughtful fellow participants, and to the people currently away from us on various adventures - you are missed!

hi ronnie ,
interesting point u raised ther . its true that ther is widespred critisism of the consept of rights among feminist writers/thinkers -but rights hav by no means been completly rejected by the feminist movement -nor ,in my view ,should they be .my own position is rights-based ,an i wil be xplaining my view on rights-based radical feminism in my talk on wednesday .
hope u can make it !

@ronnie

As you may know, the "animal rights movement" globally is a terrible philosophical mess. There ain't much rights in animal rights!

There are some (eco)feminists within the animal advocacy movement who are opposed to rights as the foundation of an ethical position - moral rights, that is, legal rights are seen as having utility.

However, there are some rights-based animal rights advocates.

I'm hoping that these intriguing issues (for me anyway!) will be fully explored on Wednesday.

I am wondering about the necessity of the notion of rights which in my view needs a lot of explanation in order
for it not to be 'the patriarchal one' and also one belonging/supportin an existing oppressive capitalist system. is it not an argument whether we can
and should to rescue the 'rights' or it is better to come up with a new word for the concept i assume you will talk about?

good question. this is a fasinating an complex isue which we hope to be xploring in some depth on wednesday . i feel that our understanding of the consept of rights is diferent - you speak about rights-based theory as strengthening the capitalist system ,wheras its my belief that a movement with an understanding of an strong comitment to rights as its moral baseline would mean the permanant colapse of that system .
anyway, hope to see u wednesday to talk about this in mor detail.

thanx for the link - in my view carol adams' critique of rights is a perfect xample of the misuse an misunderstanding of the consept .
