Now that has failed, the velvet gloves are off to reveal iron fists. But violent threats won't work either, says Caroline Ffiske.

15 year detention of five Cuban men in US jails
Free the Cuban Five
Meetings and Events in Solidarity with the Cuban Five. September 12th 2012 is the 14th anniversary of the unjust imprisonment in the US of the Cuban Five. A series of events and meetings are being held around the Ireland to mark this anniversary and highlight the unjust treatment of these five men and their families
Meeting will be attended by Magaly Llort, mother of Fernando Gonzalez and by Dr. Haymel Estinosa (daugter of airline pilot killed in US inspired terrorist attack)
Dublin: Wednesday, 19th September at Liberty Hall, starting at 6.00pm
Other meetings in Cork, Belfast, Derry and Galway. Check local press for details.
Background to the Guest Speakers
“The bombing of a Cubana Airliner in 1976 killing everybody on board, seventy three persons, remains the second most destructive act of air terrorism in North America, after 9/11” - Keith Bolender: Voices from the other Side: an oral history of terrorism against Cuba (Pluto Press 2010)
The bombing in mid-air of a civilian aircraft in 1976 which caused 73 deaths is only one example of the terrorist outrages that have been carried out against Cuba. Similar in style and victim impact to the tragic events on Sept 11th the attack has left its mark on the families of the deceased.
“The suffering of the families of the victims of 9/11 is similar to ours, and we’ve been suffering for more than 30 years”, says Haymel Espinosa Gomez.
Haymel Espinosa Gomez is the daughter of the co-pilot on that flight that was bombed in mid-flight. She is the unofficial archivist of the Cubana Airlines bombing. Haymel tells the tragic story of how her family waited to hear why her father had not returned home yet. “At 11pm that night we were told the plane was bombed, no one left alive”.
An important tour will take place in Ireland from 11th to 20th September 2012 where Dr. Haymel Espinosa, accompanied by Magali Llort, mother of Fernando Gonzalez, one of the Cuban Five will be available to talk about their experiences of the on-going terrorist attacks against Cuba by anti-Cuban groups mostly located in Miami, Florida.
Magali Llort has been involved in the international campaign to free the Cuban Five since they were arrested in Miami in 1998. She has spoken at events worldwide and is tireless in her work to bring about the freedom of the five Cuban men:
“My son, together with Antonio Guerrero, Ramon Labanino, Rene Gonzalez and Gerardo Hernandez gave up everything they had to fight a scourge that the American government boasts to condemn.”
Fernando Gonzalez has served almost 14years of a life sentence imposed on him for monitoring the movements and intentions of Orlando Bosch, one of the self- professed intellectual authors and organizers of the civilian bombing outrage.
Please contact the Free the Cuban Five Campaign Ireland for more information on tour dates and public events.
