People’s Movement Protest at IBEC Conference

category national | eu | news report author Thursday May 17, 2012 01:27author by People's Movement Report this post to the editors

This evening, The People’s Movement organised a protest outside IBEC’s conference in The Westin Hotel, Westmoreland Street.

The People’s Movement, which is campaigning for a no vote in the forthcoming referendum, were out in numbers to highlight how IBEC and others in the Yes camp promised jobs, investment and recovery during the second Lisbon Treaty campaign, none of which have surfaced.

Speaking at the parade, The People’s Movement’s Frank Keoghan stated “IBEC was one of the most vocal groups calling for a yes vote with its slogan of ‘Yes For Jobs’. The reality is that since we voted on Lisbon 2, unemployment has sky rocketed. According to CSO figures there are 114,600 less people in employment now than there were in 2009 when we voted in the last referendum. Once again they are playing on the fears and uncertainly of the Irish people by claiming that a yes vote will ‘secure Ireland’s future’ – once again they are lying.”

Adding “We in the People’s Movement are calling for a No Vote on May 31st, if ratified, the only thing this treaty promises is deeper cuts to public services and greater unemployment."

The Irish people want Justice. It is not their debt so they rightly want to burn the bondholders and to default on this unjust debt. This is not the peoples debt. Is anyone going to stand up and say this?
In addition to this the Euro as a currency has not worked out as planned. It has been a failure. Will any of the No groups campaigning against this Treaty admit that the Euro has failed and that Ireland should leave the Euro and point out that the emperor has no clothes? Will any of the No movements or parties stand up and fight and provide real answers for the Irish people.

..and I have no problem with highlighting the vested corporate agenda of Ibec...but does anyone else think energy should be focused on the 'Labour' party and its betrayals?

After all, Ibec do what it says on their capitalist tin...but Fine Gaelmore and Pet Rabbitte, Minister for Gnuspeak, are the real turncoat/sellouts...and also the ones need overturning if we are ever to get any semblance of democratic activity back into our spindustrialised institutions.

Phoenix has an interesting piece on how they have been blocked out of Clonmel for the Connolly centenary(25-27th May) by the activism of Seamus Healy and his Workers and Unemployed Action Group doing the REAL agenda rather Eamo's Enda de Blueshirt-lifting exercise.

I think if we don't clear this Stalinist cadre of deadwood and get a real replacement the debate is over. Am I on too much of a solo run, again?

I think Opus is correct the stalinist mindset of airbrushing out any discussion or debate about the Euro and refusing to discuss defaulting on bank debt wont work. We need more people like Opus to point this out. We need more solo runs not less or the 30% dont knows will not be informed on the real issues and will abstain and the Yes side will win their referendum by default!
