Caravaggio, a master painter from the Italian Baroque era who was thought to be bisexual. Jarman, a master filmmaker of the twentieth century and a gay man. Bring these two giants together, and what do you get? A classic study of artistic creativity, lust, and madness.

Caravaggio
UK, 1986, English language, 93’
Dir: Derek Jarman
Script: Derek Jarman, based on a story by Nicholas Ward-Jackson
Cast: Nigel Terry, Sean Bean, Tilda Swinton

If you are interested in art, you will drool at the re-enactment of Caravaggio’s unorthodox painting practises, and the stunning reproductions of his paintings. If you love theatre, you will applaud Jarman’s ability to pay homage to the stage tradition without “filming theatre”. If you appreciate solid performances, you will be mesmerised by Shakespearean actor Nigel Terry, the magnetic Tilda Swinton (in her first film role), and Sean Bean at his sexiest.

Caravaggio won the Silver Bear at the Berlin Film Festival that year, and it is easy to see why. The film is a great example of the stylish brashness and theatricality which made Jarman famous. Caravaggio is also an unforgettable trip into a fearless, original mind.

The Film Qlub is a special interest film club, catering for film-lovers in Dublin. We show one especially selected film every month, as part of a series of themed seasons (each season consists of ten films). What all our films have in common is that they are of interest to the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender community and their friends, that they are of a very good quality, and, in some cases, that they have a remarkable documentary value. Our aim is to select films that are arty, sexy, and committed. All our screenings are preceded by a brief introduction on the significance of the film, and followed by an open discussion. Our first season has just finished, and we will be back in September with a very exciting Season Two! Please check up our website for details, or email us if you have any queries about our films or about how to join the Film Qlub.
